    Customizing Outlook Today (2002)

    Help!

    I'm trapped in a sea of folders. I have *real* problems finding the outbox, or my contacts or other things now owing to the huge number of pst files and folders I have. So I thought I'd use Outlook Today to give me an overview.

    Like, yuk.

    I want to be able to display messages in the inbox from the outlook today view, plus display a contacts list but it won't let me. Microsoft, ever helpful, produces a lovely note telling me what the whole 5 customisable options do (woo! - that was worth some techie's time) but then - and this is the bit that interests me - directs me to a note at the resource centre for advanced customization. Hurrah! Or not, as the case may be - it doesn't appear to be there. Or anywhere, for that matter <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15>.

    So, like I say - Help!

    Thanks.

    Hmm. My Outlook 2002 Help took me to the Office 2000 pages...

    Does Custom Maintenance Wizard help?

    Not sure...reading up on it, it's not necessarily a place I think I want to go to!

    I get the impression that "advanced" could be as "simple" as making a web page which links to the stuff you want, but how you go about that is anybody's guess.

    Ha! Found it! You can't fool me, Microsoft!

    FWIW, I had to enter "Outlook Today" into the msupport pages. If I entered "Customize Outlook Today" then I got entirely the wrong thing. Duh!

    Anyway, yes - you do need to set up a custom htm page (and Microsoft is full of dire warnings about not using forms or frames or a graphical editor [long live notepad for html!] and how its almost guaranteed to change from version to version of Outlook). Oh, and did I say that it is written for OL2000, even though it will work in OL2002 and the support note relates to both versions. Hohum.

    In OL2002, right click on "Outlook Today" in folder view, and pick "Properties". Select the "Home Page" tab, and enter the custom file as a new home page. That seems to do the trick. There's also an option to "show home page by default" which I had to turn on, but I'm not sure if it was already on or not.

    All I have to do now is go figure the html...

    Ah, the joys of customisation.

    Stuart

    P.S. the link to the toolbox file is http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/A...ox.htm#outtoday, and the bulletin I followed to get there was Q236081

    Oh look, I appear to be having a conversation with myself... ...OK, not really, it's just that as fast as I find things I get more questions (honest!)

    As I suspected, the html is straightforward, but not straightforward. The basic tables and everything are pretty simple, but it's the bits that do the actual data binding that I haven't a clue about. The following come out of the example that I downloaded from Microsoft:

    <pre><OBJECT ID="CalList" CLASSID="CLSID:0468C085-CA5B-11D0-AF08-00609797F0E0">
    <PARAM NAME="Module" VALUE="Calendar">
    </OBJECT>
    </pre>

    and

    <pre><TABLE id=CalendarLiveTable border=0 cellspacing=1 cellpadding=2 valign=top
    width=100% name="ItemCol" datasrc="#CalList" style="display:;">
    <TR>
    <TD valign=top width=100%><DIV datafld="SubjectLocation" DATAFORMATAS="html"
    class=CalendarSubjectLocation>

    If you really want to go down the primrose path you should browse to msdn.microsoft.com and run searches on "Outlook View Control" then "Digital Dashboard". These will return tons of information - some of it might even be of use.

    Good luck!

    I looked into this a while back and it did look a bit complicated. Everything I've forgotten had links to it in <!post=Post #160033,160033>Post #160033<!/post>.

    Re: Customizing Outlook Today (2002)

    Ooh, but they like to make things easy, don't they...

    Masses upon masses upon masses of information. I've got objects coming out of my ears - there's the Outlook View Control and then there are another couple of objects (one of which relates directly to Outlook today but has no information to go with it). And nowhere, but nowhere, does it give any information about what params, classes, data fields etc you can use and how to access them. Piles of information relating to VB/VBA objects, none for the objects listed in the sample. AAARGH!

    I can't believe that this is so difficult...It's not like the dynamic tables are exactly rocket science (even I can understand them) but I would like to have a handy reference which tells me what data I can access and how to access it.

    Tell you what, if MS don't want to make the information readily avaiable, the least they can do is to produce a "Visual Outlook Today" editor...

    In the meantime, I'll keep on hoping that *someone* out there know where this information is squirreled away!

    Yours in extreme frustration,

    Stuart

    No help, but I can sympathise. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> Not long after I installed OL2K and discovered that Outlook Today was customisable, I thought "You bewdy! At last I can make this beast work the way I want it to.". I gave up after a few months of false starts. <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15> Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like the situation has improved. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>
