Excel 97 in Win XP Pro - Out Of Memory Errors (Excel 97 SR 2)

Excel file in question is 3.92Meg with lots of links. Machine is Pentium 4, 2.0 processor running Win XP Pro with 40 Gig HD and plenty of free disk space and 512 Meg of RAM. Paging file size has been set to max recommended effective on startup. Has anyone else run into this problem within these specs? Have searched forum before posting but could not find a situation with this level of hardware and this OS. Many thanks in advance for any ideas!

When do you get the out of memory error, load, changing sheets, clicking buttons, etc?

Hi Michael! Error occurs when trying to open the file - after clicking on Disable Macros, a little processing happens, and then the error occurs. The person trying to open the file is doing so for read-only purposes and is not relinking, etc.

Well, I was going to say that a macro might me causing it, some macros which access a tremendous number of cells such as using "Cells" with VBA have caused it for me, but since you have disabled them that must not be it. All I can think of at the moment is to search the MS Knowledge Base. Are there any add-ins which load, can you get into the VBE, or can you open the file while holding down the SHIFT key?

Sounds like recalculating causes some trouble.

Try setting calculation to manual (Tools, options, calculation) and then open the file whilst holding the shift key (avoids any macros to run).

If that fails, try pressing control-pageup *immediately after clicking Open*. If no help, retry with control-pagedown.
The above makes Excel go to another sheet. If it helps, strongly suspect that sheet to contain a corruption!

You might also find someone with Excel XP. It can sometimes fix Excel files with problems.
