    Modify Menu bars - no VBA (Excel 2000)

    I am trying to analyze a workbook that I received. It modifies the Excel menu bars when it is loaded, and I would like to change the code. I reviewed the VBA code carefully, and this workbook appears NOT to use VBA code to modify the menu bars.

    I extracted one small sheet, and deleted all the VBA code modules. I saved this as a stand-alone workbook. When I load it into Excel, I do not get any "VBA macro" warning. But it still changes the standard Excel menu bar!

    Does anyone know how to do what this workbook is doing? I am hoping someone has run into this behavior before. My brute force approach is to undo all the menu bar changes, and start over:

    Sub auto_open()
    MenuBars(xlWorksheet).Reset
    'Start changing menu bars here ...
    End Sub

    Did you check for code in the Workbook Open event routine in the module behind the ThisWorkbook object?

    It is also possible to attach toolbars to a wokbook as Jan Karal descirbes in This Post. Since you are talking menu bars here, I don't know if this is relevent.

    Actually, if I remember correctly, the old method of creating menubars didn't use a menu editor. You had to do it the hard way from a macro sheet.

    Not true Charlotte,

    XL5 had a menu editor. No coding needed (but possible).

    I'll take your word for it. I don't think I've done any real Excel programming since version 5.0. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    (Edited by HansV to update link to Excel MVP site)

    That post did not provide the answer. But I followed the link to the Excel MVP page, and I did find the answer here:
    http://www.bmsltd.ie/mvp/MVPPage.asp#JimRech

    Apparently menu edits that were made with the Excel 5/95 menu editor can not be modified by Excel 97/2000. Jim Rech has created an Add-In named "Remove Menu Editor Edits" that will remove these menu edits. I tried it, and it worked!

    Now I can start with a "clean slate". Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
