Problem with installing Office 2000 Developer (Office 2000)

I've recently purchased a new P.C. and am trying to install MS Office 2000 Developer on it. I originally bought the full package for my previous machine and had no problems ; however, having installed Office 2000 Premium, when I insert the Developer CD I get the following message :

Microsoft Office 2000 Developer requires Visiual Basic for Applications 6.0. Before installing Microsoft Office 2000 Developer install Microsoft Office 2000 or another application which contains Visual Basic for Applications 6.0

As you may imagine, I am somewhat confused ; since I've installed MS Office 2000 Premium (and it's working fine)

    What am I missing ?

    Any advice greatly appreciated

Added : Sorry, should have said, I'm working on a Pentium 4 running Windows 2000

Re: Problem with installing Office 2000 Developer (Office 2000)

Can you get into the Visual Basic editor in any of the Office apps? If not, open any of the apps and do a detect and repair and see if that fixes the problem. If you can get into the VBE, then do you have any Office XP or 2002 apps installed on the machine? XP installs a later version of the VBE6.dll, which can cause strange behavior in the 2000 VBE environment.

Re: Problem with installing Office 2000 Developer (Office 2000)

    Thanks for the reply Charlotte

Bear with me in this because whilst I can find my way around, I'm not a trained techie - most of what I know has been found out by trial and error (and error ... ... and error ... ... and error ....)

In answer to you first point, yes I can ; that is, I've gone into Access, opened a module and the screen comes up with 'Microsoft Visual Basic' in the title and will allow me to make changes to a module.

On the second point, No, no contact with XP or 2002. This is a brand new machine and, except for Windows 2000 being installed when I received it from the supplier, I've done nothing regarding installation of other operating systems. I've not seen 2002 yet (I know it's around but here in the UK we are a little behind) and although I was offered XP so many friends have had problems with incompatabilities that I've steered well clear of it.

If it's any guide to you I have VBE6.dll in my Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedVBAVBA6 folder. It's version 6.0.89.67 dated 09/20/2000

Re: Problem with installing Office 2000 Developer (Office 2000)

Ray, don't feel bad about being perplexed - us professionals are too! What a wierd thing! FYI, like Charlotte, I suspect the problem lies in the Office install, before we even get to the Dev Ed.

    (1) Please open the VBA editor from word or excel to check it works OK as Charlotte suggested - Access is a special case. Note the information in the bottom line of the "About" dialog box ie. mine is "Version 9108 VBA Retail 6.3.8863 Forms3: 11.0.4523" (thats Office11Beta, but you get the idea).

    (2) Check the edition/SP of Office 2000 you have installed - I suspect you are trying to install Office Developer onto a patched or service packed Office, which should work, but you may have found a combination that doesn't. (It worked smoothly for me installing the original Office 2000, original Developer, and then service packing everything (in approximately ship date order), and I have installed the orig Dev on a fully SP'ed Office, and then SP'ed the Dev - again, with no problems.)

Re: Problem with installing Office 2000 Developer (Office 2000)

Well, that's definitely not the version installed with OXP.

Interestingly enough, when I stuck my ODE 2000 Developers Tools 1.5 (SR-1) disk in, I got the same message, although the tools are already installed on my machine. It did not appear to mean that VBA wasn't installed, since it obviously is installed. It seemed more like a caution of some sort. It did allow me to go on to the next step in the wizard, so have you tried that?

I wonder if it has anything to do with the version of Windows installer (msi.dll) on the machine. My ODE was originally installed using the Win2k version of the installer (1.11.2405.0), which was later updated to version 2.0.2600.2.

Re: Problem with installing Office 2000 Developer (Office 2000)

How odd! I got the same message today when I tried to install Office 2000 from the CDS on my new (also Pentium 4) machine with Windows 2000.
It's a new machine and I thought a fresh installation would be best.
I've not had this happen before - it has always gone smoothly each time.
But now when I put in the Office Developer disc I get the same message, viz:

Microsoft Office 2000 Developer requires Visiual Basic for Applications 6.0. Before installing Microsoft Office 2000 Developer install Microsoft Office 2000 or another application which contains Visual Basic for Applications 6.0

Do you need Office Developer to actually write VBA code in Office aps or can you do without it?
If you do need it, any ideas how to proceed from here?

Re: Problem with installing Office 2000 Developer (Office 2000)

Well, thanks to all of you. I'm pleased to see that it isn't just me !

To address Steve's answer first :

    1. From Word the VBA editor seems to work. At the bottom of 'Help About' it tells me it's VBA Retail 6.0.8714 Forms3: 2.01

    2. Not certain how I check which version of Office is installed but it's not patched over anything ; I started with a brand new machine that only had Windows 2000 installed and, except for having to put my (very old) Office 95 disk in drive 'A' (to 'prove') I was entitled to use the upgrade version of Office 2000, I told it to install everything from the Office 2000 Premium CDs (all 4 of them) - having 80-Gb on this new machine and not (even now) having filled 8 Gb I thought I'd bung everything in, needed or not. Everything seemed to work fine for the Office 2000 Premium disks ; it was not until I came to install Developer that I got the problem. It displays that message and then closes

Noting Charlotte's comment about 'Do you need Office Developer to write VBA Code' - that's not my problem ; I got the full version (i.e. with Developer) so that I could do Access run-time versions on a couple of databases I have written, so I assume I'm not able to achieve this ; not to mention that I am in any case annoyed that, having got the full package, it won't install as it should. Funny that I didn't have this problem on my old Windows 98 set-up !

No, you don't need it to write VBA code. It includes the license to redistribute a runtime version of Access and licenses for the ActiveX controls so you can use them in your distributed apps..

Have you tried logging in to Windows as Administrator (assuming you have a different standard login) and doing the install from there? I've seen that make a difference before this. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

Charlotte : this is a stand-alone, not networked computer. I ONLY sign in a sAdministrtaor - no other I.D.s set up.

(We'll get there in the end though!!)

Just a quick note to say thanks to everybody for their assistance on this. Sorry, I've been tied up with family problems for a while and that's why I hadn't acknowledged before. I'll try the information given by Howard and Wendell and when I've checked it all out will confirm if it worked (i.e., if it doesn't I'll yell for help again)
