Right Click won't work (Windowx XP Home edition)

I have recently upgraded from Me to XP. When I upgraded I assigned two users Derek (me) and Carol. I leave the computer on all the time and one morning I saw a message to the effect that the system had crashed and restarted overnight. Everything worked fine except that in the Windows Explorer a right click of the mouse results in a permanent hourglass icon and the system stops. Alt-Cntrl-Delete can be used to close and restart the Windows Explorer, which works fine until I forget myself and hit the right mouse button. However, if I log off Derek and restart as Carol the right mouse button works fine. I have run a full Norton virus check which reported no viruses. Carol thinks my problem is something to do with my administrator rights but I have not knowingly relinquished them. If anyone can help me solve this problem I will be most grateful.

You can try reinstalling your mouse. Right click on My Computer ,Left click Properties ,Left click Harware ,Left click Device Manager ,From that box find your mouse and Left click on The + sign beside it, right click on tha next line that is your mouse type and click on uninstall. Reboot and it will reload your mouse and drivers. See if that cures your problem. See the screenshot below.

It could also be some corruption in one of the configuration files for that user's account that's failing.

You also might try restoring your system back to an earlier date. Go to start, Programs, Accessories, System tools, And click on SYSTEM RESTORE and you will see the box below. Put the dot just like it is in the box below and down at the bottom click NEXT. A box will come up with a calender. There will be dates that are darker then the others. Choose one of those dates that was before your problem started and click Next. Your system will reboot itself to that earlier date when things were working correctly.

This is from Derek
Thank you cowboydawg for your suggestions.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the mouse but it still doesn't work in my profile. It is still fine in Carol's.
I have disabled System restore to conserve disk space, so that option is not available.
I will see if I can get into my users profile.

Thanks again for your reply

It most likely is some corruption in one of the configuration files for that user's account that's failing. After uninstalling and reinstalling the mouse tells me that it has to be in your users account. I will see what I can find out about repairing a corrupted user account. Just a couple of questions. Have you ran Scandisk ? Have you installed any software , programs,or made any changes on your user account , thats not on hers?Have you tried to reboot and use F8 function key and selecting Last Known Good Configuration?

It appears that you may be in the market to do a clean install of XP which will get rid of ALL of the Me stuff which may be your real problem.

Give us more information about your system, i.e., make, model, how much ram, printer make and model and scanner make and model. Any other information would help including some of the software and versions you are running.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
