Find dialog box slow to popup (Word 97 SR2)

I'm using Word 97 SR2 on Win98 (non-SE). When clicking Menu>Edit>Find (or Replace) for the first time in each new run of Word, there is a delay of about 5 seconds before the dialog box pops up. Subsequent use of Find/Replace (in the same Word session) entails no delay in the dialog popup.

A seemingly related problem is the Edit tab in Menu>Options dialog, which behaves similarly. And, using Edit tab or Find/Replace just once eliminates the delay in the appearance of the counterpart dialog!

You might have a corrupt Data key in the registry - that is usually the culprit if tabs of the Tools/Options... dialog have problems. See Phil Rabichow's <!post=trouble shooting guide,197827>trouble shooting guide<!/post>, in particular the part about the Data key.

Depending on the speed of your machine, this may be a 'feature'. In the past a great deal of criticism has been directed at the speed it took to open some microsoft applications eg Word.

The programmers got a faster startup by not loading all features initially but loading them if they were asked for by the user during that session. Once the feature is loaded, the time delay is removed. This certainly happens with VBA in both Word 97 and 2000. I haven't ever noticed it on anything else but it sounds plausible enough to possibly explain your problem. I don't know if there are options where you can sacrifice boot-up time to remove this issue but it may be worth investigating.

This is unlikely in my case, as the delay occurs even after I've used other features for quite a long while. But I'm open to more evidence to the contrary.
