    stripping out attachments (OE6)

Does anyone know of a simple way of stripping attachments from OE messages before forwarding? One way I've found is to drag the message to the desktop, drop that into Notepad/Wordpad, strip the attachment text out, save the message, drag back to OE folder and voila, the attachment's stripped ready for onward forwarding. (this is all to do with an antispam program that I'm "training" but it doesn't need the attachements, only the headers and body text).

    Hi, helix ~

Sure there is a very simple way of accomplishing this:<UL><LI>Forward the message first<LI>Right-click on the attachment and select 'Remove'<LI> <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>[/list]

Ah - works fine if the email is not an attachment! Perhaps I haven't given the whole picture. An email is forwarded to me as an attachment and I need to strip the attachment WITHIN from this before, forwarding to the antispam system - the software won't act on standard forwarded messages, only when the message is forwarded as an attachment. Sounds confusing but isn't really! There's no easy way to strip from within an attachment, OR for that matter from an original, apart from your method.

Sorry, but that was as clear as mud. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20> Strip from within an attachment? That does not make sense to me. What is attached exactly? What type of file?

    Re: stripping out attachments (OE6)

Back to basics on this one. Our mail server software has a new facility which tags incoming messages as spam (adds the word to the subject line). By reading the messages we can identify if it's genuine spam or not and send as appropriate to the server for analysis and training. These messages MUST be forwarded to the server as an attachment (.eml file) but without any original message file attachments (such as doc/jpg/gif/pdf whatever) - i.e. the headers, body text, and footers of the message is what is analysed for spam training, not any attachment. So, for example, if I see one on my OE, I highlight message, right click and "forward as attachment" - it's not possible to strip any file attached from the forwarded message using this method. So rather than confuse the staff and take their time up using the method I indicated, I have asked them to send the message to me as an .eml attachment, and at the moment I am processing this by the method I indicated - by using notebook/wordpad, you can read the whole message, strip it of extra headers AND file attachments. Drop the stripped message back into OE, and you then essentially have the original message as recieved by the staff, without the attachment - I can then forward THAT as a .eml to the server for training. However this method is time consuming - albeit simple when practiced - so I'd like an easier method along the lines of "forward as an attachment but without file attachments". If you see what I mean! Does that make sense now? So that's what I mean by stripping attachments from within an attachment - anything like a .doc file from within an .eml. <img src=/S/headthrob.gif border=0 alt=headthrob width=15 height=15>

you (or the sender) needs to strip the attachment before forwarding, which is not possible in OE. You can remove 'attached' attachments using OL and probably other mail clients though. Embedded attachments, such as images on HTML mail, are more difficult to remove.

What is the purpose of forwarding as attachment? I require my employees to copy the header, paste it in the body and forward spam normally. Using OE, they can copy and paste the message source in the body and it's easy to delete attachments.
