Save as returns (read only) (Word 2000)

In this version with auto save turned on or off, the user is saving to a network drive but to their user folder with ALL rights. The first time that a change is made, you can save, save as and the document changes and saves. The second change will not occure, the system makes you change the name of the file before it saves. The autosave location was moved from the network drive user folder to their C: drive, same problem.

I suspect the file is still open by another user or in another session .

Do you have access to the Computer Management tools in the Control Panel?

If so, you can check to see if that file is really still open (and who has it open).

Of course, you don't mention if code has control of your FileSave or FileSaveAs or
if you have a document mgt system running such things.

Re: Save as returns (read only) (Word 2000)

    Hi Sergio:
I'm not sure I can help. If by the "autosave", you mean Tools/Options/"Save AutoRecover info every...", that shouldn't affect the save command. Make sure that Tools/Options/Save/Fast Saves is turned OFF & that your document is not read-only. Also, make sure that Tools/Options/Save/ isn't set for read-only recommended.

Other than that, you might check the steps listed in <!post=this,197827>this<!/post> post.
    Cheers,

Could there be any add-ins or auto macros running to disable the Save function and replace it with the SaveAs. This sounds like someone doesn't trust Word not to screw up the file so they forced it to make more copies.

Re: Save as returns (read only) (Word 2000)

I have checked that link to problems with word and some fixed. I am going to try most of those and see if that works. It might be a tmp problem as it lets you make one change and then when it says it is a read only doc, and you don't save it (say no) it creates a tmp file in the folder.
