    Re: Document Locked (Office XP)

    Hi Bruce:
I don't have Office XP or an answer. But I'm wondering if you recently installed a program or add-in. The archive bit is placed on a file to indicate that it has changed since it was last backed up. The bits are removed by backup utilities (depending on the options set). That's how a backup program knows to back up only new & changed files. Maybe this can give you some ideas.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

    Hi, Phil ~

No, sir....other than M$ & AV updates, nothing has been installed on this particular unit for some time. I searched through Lounge archives and found some similar situations, but none were quite the same as this one.
I figured this is the hottest spot in town for this Word issue <IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/wizard.gif>

    Hi Bruce

I have just put a similar post as you, can you look at mine 225075 and let me know if the symptoms are the same.

    Regards

    Mike

    Hi, Mike ~

Yes, I checked your post before I posted and they don't seem to be the same symptoms.

    Hi, Howard ~

I will surely give it a shot. Do you suggest I have a document open or just Word running or neither? I am curious what you might think this may accomplish.....isn't a hard boot normally to restore hardware or system settings during a lock-up?

    Document Locked (Office XP)

I have a series of Word documents that I have created and when I attempt to open them, I am greeted with the message that it is locked and would I "like to open a read-only version?". I find that if I close the document, right-click > 'Properties' and uncheck 'Archive' in the attributes, then there is no problem. I checked and noticed all the documents I made have a checkmark by 'Archive' in the attributes. Why would all these relatively recent documents have this checked in the first place? I don't know what I did to trigger this, but is there a way to un-trigger this?

For the record:<UL><LI>There are no macros<LI>There are no other users and this unit is stand-alone<LI>There have been no power/OS/app failures<LI>There are no '.tmp' or '~$*.*' files<LI>document is not passworded or otherwise locked by author (at least not knowingly intended)[/list]
