Auto format in Outlook replies. (2000 on W2K)

Is there any way to permanently change or remove the auto format "feature" in Qutlook email replies. Bill Gates may think it's neat. I think it stinks!

Not sure what you meant by "auto format", but if it's the automatic indent and prefix with a ">" then it's easily fixed.

Select "Tools Options Preferences E-mail Options

If you are using Word as your e-mail editor, choosing Tools > AutoCorrect > AutoFormat As you Type may get you to the settings you want.

Every time I send a reply the text I type comes up a different color in Times New Roman 10 point. I want it set to black, Arial 11 pt. All the time, and for every reply. For now I've set up a macro that makes the changes, but I should not have to do that!

(Did I say that I use Word for email?)

I've changed the style sheet (which can only be done from a message window as it doesn't show in the list from a regular Word document.) but it only lasts for that document. It always comes back to the changed colors on the next reply. And it doesn't always use the same style sheet.

Thanks. Been there, done that. It just goes back to doing its own thing in email.

Sorry - I don't use Word for email, so no clues either.

Thanks for your time and effort. I'll just keep poking at it and if I fix it I'll let you know.

Search your computer for a template named email.dot and open it (make sure you get the template open and not a Document1). See if you can save your changes directly in the template.

By the way, WordMail is buggy in Outlook 2000 and earlier. I never use it.

What is the thing it is doing? Is it something that is described in that dialog or something else?

When I send a reply the font used comes up a different color for each reply. Sometimes almost unreadable. The font itself is always Times New Roman.

I am the type of person who wants to choose what she wants to choose when she wants to choose it. I do NOT want some stupid machine picking colors for my fonts.

Okay. Found email.dot and changed it. Shut down Outlook from the Outlook window AND in the Task Manager. Doesn't seem to have worked. Maybe I need to reboot the system.

There is also a style with my name on it. This style is accessable for formatting in the message window but no where else that I can find. Changes to that style only hold for the message window. I can delete it but next time I open Outlook the idiot thing is back.

I've heard others say that Wordmail is buggy, but I don't have a problem with it. Besides, I'm addicted to Word's bells and whistles. Especially AutoText!

(Edited by jscher2000 on 14-Feb-03 12:49. )
It's possible that your reply is inheriting settings from the message you received, particularly if the format is other than plain text. However, I just haven't used WordMail enough to know what is going on.

    With this one little exception.

"This one little exception" is so true!

I found the email.dot file and made changes. I shut down everything and rebooted the machine. Now the text in my replies comes up a medium blue each time. That I can live with. But pink, or green, or pale blue? Forget it!

Over the years it seems that I'm the one to find the problems no one else has seen or to ask the questions that no one else asks. This seems to bear it out.

Thanks much for all your help.

    Hi,

    I FOUND IT!

    It's in Word - Tools - Options - General - Email Options. . . - Personal Stationary

Piece of cake when you know where to look.

You can set up fonts for both outgoing mail and replies.
Going into email.dot helped a little as I was able to stop the fonts from changing colors. But this sets up the whole schmaltz.
