Table causes document file size to increase (WordXP)

We have just upgraded our documents from Word97 to WordXP. Some of the documents which were 1MB in size (because they contained lots of tables) are now 5MB in size! I found the knowledge base article 220564 about this, but it doesn't offer any help.

The problem these enormous documents cause is that you can't work in them any more because it is too slow. We have Pentium IV computers, but that doesn't help.

    Can anyone offer a suggestion?

    Thanks.

Does it help to go into Tools > Options > Compatibility tab and change the options from Word 97 to Word 2002, and then save again? Just wondering if maintaining the older structure somehow requires extra storage...

    Jscher,

Thanks for the suggestion. That didn't make any difference.
I think we will just have to use as few tables as possible.

Is there an option to disable features not supported by Word 97? That may result in a smaller size. Starting with Word 2000, Word increased the complexity of tables. As a result, documents with tables are larger, display more slowly, scroll more slowly, & are more prone to corruption than previous versions.

    Marie-Therese,

Following on from Phil's suggestion, you might be able to rescue the tables by converting them to text, and then reconverting back to table - have to admit I've never tried this with problem documents, but it seems plausible that this should leave behind anything in the original 97-generated tables that is incompatible with 2002; might be worth a try.

    Gary and Phil,

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried everything and the document sizes were much the same.
