    Locked for editing (WordXP)

    Hi,

Is there a MS property that locks Word (also Excel and Powerpoint) from entering any keystokes. I get the message Document is locked for editing and that is on a blank sheet, also loads of menu otions are greyed out. This happens on Excel and Powerpoint as well.

    Any ideas.

    Regards

    MIke

Does Unprotect appear on the Tools menu? If so, try to Unprotect the document. If not, tell us more about your environment (e.g., are your templates on a server, do you use document management software, etc.).

    Hi,

Virtually all menu options are greyed out including unprotect and it has effected Excel and Powerpoint as well so it must be related to some MS file outside of the product.

It is on a stand alone PC, It was working yesterday fine, today not, I have not installed any software, I have opened other files and I only noticed when I came to change a file sent to me.

I thoght of a virus, but I run nortons fireware and anti virus software. does that help. Should I just try to reinstall the MS products.

    Regards

    Mike

In the installer, there may be an option to "repair" Office. It makes sense to try that and see if it helps. Hopefully you will get some other suggestions, too.

This almost sounds like you haven't activated your installation of Office XP. After 50 uses Office "shuts down" and only allows you to do a few things.

From the Frequently Asked Questions About Office XP page:

    Q. I have heard that I will need to activate my Office software once I have installed it. Why is that required and how does it work?

    A. ....You can start Office XP up to 50 times before you have to activate it. After the fiftieth time, Office will go into reduced-functionality mode: You will be able to view and print existing documents, but you won't be able to edit existing documents or create new ones.....

Once you activate Office, it should be back to normal

    Hi Bryan,

You are correct, the confussing thing was that I have been running this software for ages, and I deactivated it sometime ago, and then I rebuilt the PC over christmas, reinstalled all the software and did not think about the reactivation code. I would have expected WORD to tell me that the activation code is not in.

Anyway all now working - Many thanks..

    Regards

    Mike
