Icons (XP-sr1)

Anyone know why some files offer the customize tab (after R-click and "properties") and allow a change of icons, and in others it doesn't show?

Would you be able to give a couple of examples of each, please?

I have a default folder in which all of my "MS Office Datafiles - Bill" are kept. Ease of backup, and on another partition in the last 2 machines I've had.
Now with XP, I set things up the same way, without partitioning. But in addition to saving off to my default directory, the same file tree is listed in both "My Documents" and again in "Bill Ennis's Documents" in the same place in the tree as the C: drive itself.
We all have little irritations with Windows (and rather large ones...) and mine here is: I can change the icon in my subfolders, but not "MS Office Datafiles - Bill", or in the other 2 places the subs are listed.
Why? It's not that it's a big deal - I've just been doing this long enough to know that simple little things can indicate a far bigger problem.

George Orwell must have had a premonition about this when he wrote Animal Farm:

All Pigs are equal, but some are more equal than others.

The same goes for folders. The folders you're having trouble with are probably special system folders, that act like folders most of the time, but don't exist in the same way as conventional folders. And thus can't be played with the same way either.

(Someone should pop in here with the technical explanation.)

It's all part of the illusion that MS has kindly provided us, so we don't need to worry our pretty little heads about what really happens in WIndows. The problem is, we foolishly try to tailor the system to suit us, only to discover that all isn't quite the way it seems. Like folders that are just that bit more equal than other folders.

Get a copy of Microangelo and you will have the ability to change the appearance (icon) of any file or folder on your system. There's a little applet that's part of the program, called "On Display", that does this little trick and maintains a folder of the icons you have chosen to replace the originals with. It's about $70 to buy, which is a bit pricey just to change a few default icons, but if you are into graphics and icons, it has many other features that justify the price. There is a free demo version available for download that will allow you to change the icons and they will remain that way after the demo period has expired. It will also give you a chance to see if the program is something you want or need.

Thanks. I'll try it. And maybe therapy, for my compulsive need to control Windows...
