Split Word doc into smaller html files

    Hi,

I have converted a large document to HTML with Word 2000. I now need to split this document into smaller HTML files where the file "splitting" is done on Heading 1, Heading 2 and Heading 3. This leaves me with alot of smaller HTML files based on these headings.

    Any ideas are welcome!!

    thanks,
    Ivan Weinstein

Work in Outline View with only eadings 1,2,3 visible (You have to click on the Number 3 on the Outline View Toolbar).
Write a macro to mark one para in Heading 3, cut it and paste it into an empty Word File and Save the File as HTML.
Modify it later to mark Heading 2 and Heading 1 and cover the entire file.

    Hi Ivan,

John McGhie, MS Word MVP, provided the steps to do this in one of his posts:

    Hi Peter:

This is actually extremely simple: You simply save the document as a Master Document. This will split it up into individual files.

    1) Go into Outline View

    2) Select from the first Heading 1 to the end of the document

    3) Click Insert Subdocument on the Master Document toolbar. If it's greyed out, you have material selected at the beginning of the selection that is not heading 1 style.

This instantly divides the document into pages at each Heading 1 style.

    4) Now, within each Heading 1 division, select from the first Heading 2 style down to but not including the Heading 1 style at its end.

    5) Click Insert Subdocument again. Again, if it's greyed out, you have selected something at the bottom that is not in the Heading 2 area.

Again, this instantly divides the document into pages at each Heading 2 style.

    6) Now do it again for Heading 3's if you need to.

    7) Now save the whole thing as HTML.

    8) Now, discard the actual Master Document (the first file). By now, it should contain no text at all, just URLs. You can use it to build your Table of Contents if you wish, but it's not much use.

    You're done.

HTML saved out of Word is fairly bulky: you may want to strip it for
Internet use. See the following URLs for instructions:

    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/2000/articles/wDosPeeler.htm>http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/2000/art.../wDosPeeler.htm</A>
    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/2000/articles/oRemoveMarkup.htm>http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/2000/art...emoveMarkup.htm</A>
    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/2000/articles/htmlfilter.htm>http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/2000/art.../htmlfilter.htm</A>

Warning! Make a sopy of your files to try this on. If you strip them back too far, you will lose ALL your formatting :-)

I use this procedure to create and maintain a 2,500-page Intraweb in the
    office.

    Hope this helps>>
