    invalid long filename

    help! my w98 machine wont reboot. if i run scandisk i get a message 'invalid long filename entry on this drive - unable to fix' - when scandisk finishes i get a blue screen fatal error and when i press any key to continue the machine tries to restart. what's going on? thanks

    What fatal Error # do you get? What was the last few things you added or changed before this problem started, such as new software or hardware. Also have you tried to restore to an earlier date from DOS Command Promt?

    Had a similar pleasant experiemce, but the name of the file was in the error message ( in 8.3). Booting in DOS, I found and deleted it, and it fixed the problem. Hope that helps.

    thanks for your reply - sorry about the delay getting back - its doesn't give an error number or a filename - it just says invalid long filename - not very helpful i'm afraid.

    sorry - also i didnt add any new software or hardware recently. how would i restore to an earlier date from DOS?
