Registry programs (XP Home)

What registry monitoring/clean up of old files do you recommend? I'm afraid to edit the registry, but would like to know about some automated programs that would monitor registry changes, undo, and clean up after uninstalling software. Are there any that are novice friendly?

Thanks
Brett

Re: Registry programs (XP Home)

Maybe the thought that we're not capable of editing the reg but we're perfectly happy letting some automated program go in and thrash around is why these forums are so popular in the first place...(just kidding). I use MacAfee Quick Clean 3.0, which is pretty unobtrusive, and will monitor a software installation so if you decide to uninstall, it will make sure Everything is uninstalled, which is how the registry gets cluttered up in the first place. In my opinion, it does everything you asked for, for about $20usd (I bought it at Costco for $17 with a $10 rebate=$7!!!)For a closer to real editing, but still a little more user friendly program, Jv16 Power Tools (is that the name?) is highly regarded, free, and does a good job.

I have been "thrashing around" the registry ever since I first started using xp, and have never had any problems, have learned a lot, and have made my "xp-erience" (sorry) better and more "mine". It's really not anything to be afraid of. Back up, set a restore point before you start, take it slow, and if you make changes, make one, close regedit, and reboot. In other words don't go into the registry, make a bunch of changes and deletions, and then reboot once. If you need to retrace your steps, you'll never know which change did you in. One at a time, reboot, and check to make sure everything is cool.

have fun,
kip

You got the name right, and it's available from jv16.org .

Hi, Brett ~

If you need something that is "novice friendly", I would recommend RegCleaner 4.3.0.780. It is made by the same company and a component of the more complicated 'jv16 Power Tools'.

Once you install RegCleaner, all you will ever really need to do is click on 'Tools' > 'Registry Cleanup' > 'Do them All', then select the results and click 'Remove Selected' in the lower right-hand corner and it is as simple as that!

RegCleaner is an old version of the one found in jv16 power tools. The site recommends using jv16 power tools. Just note that his is a powerful program and using it witout understanding what you are removing could result in a PC that will not run properly. Don't ask me how I know.

Hi, nmorikaw ~

As mentioned above, RegCleaner is a component of the more complicated 'jv16 Power Tools'. Brett specifically requested info on an "automated program" that was "novice friendly", neither of which 'jv16 power tools' are.

The very fact you stated "this is a powerful program and using it without understanding what you are removing could result in a PC that will not run properly" is precisely why I recommended RegCleaner 4.3.0.780 as it appropriately meets both desired criteria.
