Phantom Word xp typing (Office XP)

My Word,Office xp, running on an HP Pavilion 5495, 512 memory, reported as 504,has started typing on its own. While waiting to enter copy strange words or parts of them appear. I have unplugged my ISP and it still happens. Have run Norton and AVG viruses and none have been found. Just put up a blank word page and later this was on the screen:

Last time this question was asked, Jefferson pointed at Infrared keyboards and interference from another one in your immediate vicinity.

It could be a good way to spy on the neighbours but I recommend either building a faraday cage around your workstation or maybe plug your keyboard in. Is there a way to change frequency?

my keyboard is the laptop. I just covered the infrared port but the typing still goes on.

Actually, I think someone else had the inspiration about the infrared... I tend to suspect things like Internet "tickers" or anything else running in the background, chat windows, that sort of thing. However, it could be a virus/trojan, as it apparently was in the thread Extraneous Words Appearing When Composing (OE6). Worth checking if you're not fully protected.

By golly you are right - it wasn't you after all although you did have some other leads on the same <!post=thread,190671>thread<!/post>

My apologies to Bryan Carbonnell who provided the infrared tip.

The abovementioned thread had several other places to look to stop this errant behaviour.

One other thing that it may be is Office XP has some accessibility option (things like voice recognition) IIRC. and the may be picking up sound from the laptop microphone.

I think the only way to disable this is to actually uninstall that particular component.

    I'd give you a step-by-step, but I don't have Office XP.

It WAS the voice recognition mike that was inadvertently turned on. Turned it off and all is well. Never used it and donot know how it was activated. For a week I had been getting messages to train my voice for the mike and could not find how to stop it. Now I have. Thanks. Glad I did not reinstall WORD, disconnect any more peripherals, change memory chips, report faulty processor, or reformat the HD. With the infra red lead I wondered about spying. Who was watching and talking. It turned out it was me.
