    Windows Update Install Checker (Home/Pro)

I just ran across this Windows Update Install Checker utility today. Microsoft has a command line program called qfecheck.exe for WinXP and Win 2K that will verify the successful installation of hotfixes. If you ever wondered which hotfixes have been installed, or whether one was successful or not, this utility should tell you. By the way, is there a difference in a patch and a hotfix? Notice that this is a different utility than the Microsoft Network Security Hotfix Checker (hfnetchk.exe) Tool and the Baseline Security Analyzer. Links and details on all three utilities are below. I can't give you an educated answer to the question "What's the difference in qfecheck.exe and hfnetchk.exe." I assume that qfecheck includes both security hotfixes and general windows updates, where as hfnetchk.exe just checks for security hotfixes. qfecheck.exe is just for WinXP and Win2K. hfnetchk.exe also covers NT, Exchange Server, SQL Server, IIS, etc. across several versions. Again I assume if both of these utilities were run on a XP machine, the results of hfnetchk would also be included in the qfecheck results. Can anyone speak from experience on using these two utilities.

Thanks for these links (Microsoft Network Security Hotfix Checker is unavailable now though). I'm about to use them to "dig in" and try to find a solution to a problematic update.

Re: Windows Update Install Checker (Home/Pro)

I have installed QFECheck and run it. It keeps on telling me that KB923689 must be reinstalled. I have tried removing the hotfix and reinstalling, but still get the same response. I have downloaded the hotfix again (turns out it is the same as I have on my archive), but again, no change.

    Any ideas?

    Chris

This appears to be a known problem. Read this MSKB article carefully - you may not have to do anything: Error message when you install security update 923689 (MS06-078) on Windows XP SP2 or when you run Qfecheck.exe after you install this security update
