    Application Handling

    Re:<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=xl&Number=22334&page=0&view =collapsed&sb=5>Instances of Excel Thread</A>

Is there a way to tweak windows to think that Excel isn't open even if it is? I have a call-tracking form built in Excel. If a user opens any other spreadsheet, that spreadsheet uses the most recent instance of excel to view the spreadsheet. This is a problem, because in Excel, Userforms are always displayed in 'Modal' meaning they take precedence over anything else in the application. Ideally, when one of my users click on another excel spreadsheet to open it, another instance of Excel would start to view the data within that worksheet. Any Ideas?

    Thanks!

If you literally only need to VIEW the file, can you use the Excel viewer?

My users will most likely be editing/viewing files.. but the excel viewer would be helpful.. (I think on average, we have some 20% system resources free on these machines. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/nope.gif border=0 width=15 height=15>.) Can you provide a DL link? <img src=/S/bow.gif border=0 width=15 height=15>

Not immediately - should be on the Microsoft Office free stuff and thingies site. I'll have a look later if you can't find it.

    Re: Application Handling

    I've found it at <A target="_blank" HREF=http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/2000/downloadDetails/xlviewer.htm?FinishURL=/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=20150&redirect=no>Microsoft' s Office Update Site</A>.

Any insight on opening a new instance of Excel when a spreadsheet is used for editing/viewing? <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 width=15 height=15>

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q211/4/81.ASP>Q211481</A> lists the switches that can be used with Excel 2K.
A quick test here shows that with excel already running, entering

    drogram filesMicrosoft Officeofficeexcel.exe

from the Run command starts a new instance of Excel.
(I believe this to be the case because I get the warning 'Personal.xls is already open...' - hence the link to the switches as you may need to tweak the start-up parameters.)

    Re: Application Handling

    Hmm...

It's a given that my call tracking database will be on the representatives machines. Generally, they get excel spreadsheets from people without the tracking database. My question is, can windows/excel be modified so that if my spreadsheet is open, a new instance of excel is called when another spreadsheet is open? Or, another instance of excel is called when any worksheet is opened?

What would be REALLY nice, is if I had VB. I could make VB recognize that an .xls file is being opened, and give the user options to view, or edit, or open a new instance... but I don't have any idea how to do it otherwise... <img src=/S/aflame.gif border=0 width=15 height=15>

    Re: Application Handling

    More insight on this...

I can change the file extension parameters in Windows to call another application when .xls files are opened... is there a way to maybe code some HTML to effectively do this?

The question then is how do I exclude my database from being read as just another .xls file? <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 width=15 height=15>
