Losing Favorites (IE6.0 & Win XP)

I keep losing the Favorites I've made in IE6.0. I have to constantly go back and restore my settings to an earlier time. Any suggestions?

Do you mean there are no favourites at all on your list, not even the default ones that come packaged with MSIE 6? When you say restore settings to an earlier time, can you explain a little.

Re: Losing Favorites (IE6.0 & Win XP)

Thank you for your reply and sorry that I wasn't clearer. I lose all of the Favorites that I've added since I installed XP. The original ones that came with IE6 still remain.

Re Restore Settings: in Win XP I can move back in time (like a time machine) and pick a time and date to restore everything to, e.g. I can set the PC to its settings of yesterday at 3:00 PM. This works in restoring my Favorites, except for any that I've added from the "restore" point to now.

I hope that this clarifies things.

Your Favorites are all 'url links' stored in a folder on your computer. I don't understand why something would be repeatedly emptying the contents of this folder.

Try to copy the contents of your Favorites folder to another folder -- say "FavBackup" -- and simply save your favorites there. Then to restore them, simply copy them back into Favorites.

As to what is causing this?? Sounds weird to me. Have you checked for viruses?

Hi Eli, R2 and Bruce both are experts so do follow their advice. I would have asked the same question relating to virus, run a virus check and see if anything is found. Also make sure your XP patches and critical updates are installed. Certainly back up the favourites, turf them onto a cd rw, or whatever you use for backup. Let us know how you get along.

Hi,
Thank you for taking the time and interest in my IE6 problem.
I do a weekly VirusScan update and system scan. I even scanned the empty A drive.
It's been almost 10 days and today I lost most of my Favorites again. The Favorites revert back to some point where I first started adding Favorites. Today, I went back to 9 PM last night in System Restore and I'm back where I started, except for any Favorites I added today.
I realize that I could make a backup folder and every time that I added a Favorite, I'd have to backup the folder. It would save the Favorites but seems to be more of a palliative solution than resolution.
Have you had any additional thoughts or insights in the past 10 days?

Re: Losing Favorites (IE6.0 & Win XP)

Hi, Eli ~

I have been looking for a solution to your issue, but it is a weird one and have not found it to be one that others may have encountered.

These questions may have been previously proffered - Have you applied all the latest Windows critical updates? Have you run Ad-aware or Spybot with the latest updates? Is your unit purchased with XP pre-installed?

Instead of continually using system restore each time to recover your favorites, I would create a folder in your 'My Documents' and store the favorites there. They are merely files with a '.url' extension. I know this may be a pain in the butt, but it will be easier than conjuring system restore each time for now until a reason and resolution can be found.

Sorry I don't have any better further thoughts or insights

Hi Eli:
Let me throw out some random ideas. Where are you looking when you say you've lost your favorites? Are you actually looking inside the Favorites folder or is it a menu problem? Do you have your system set to display extensions of registered files? Are the favorites being created as hidden files? Maybe some of these questions will at least eliminate some possibilities.

Thank you for your help and support. I'll set up a Pst backup file.
I installed Win XP on this drive, which became my primary HD. I still have everything from my pre-Win XP days on the D drive.
I run SpyBot about once a week.

Hi Phil,
When I open the Favorites folder, the folders that I've created and the URL in the folders are gone.
"Do you have your system set to display extensions of registered files?" How do I do this?
"Are the favorites being created as hidden files?" If this were the case, then why would the URLs be accessible over time and then suddenly disappear?

Re: Losing Favorites (IE6.0 & Win XP)

Hi Eli:
I don't have the answers to those questions; I don't have Win XP. I'm just trying to figure out logically why this could happen. Another thought, but you might have already looked at this, do you have any utility (like a cleanup utility) that cleans up folders? i.e. something that runs automatically.

By the way, under Win98, you show all files & show extensions by going to Start/Settings/Folder Options.../View tab &:
checking the option to show all folders
unchecking the option "Hide file extensions for known file types".

Hope this helps,

Re: Losing Favorites (IE6.0 & Win XP)

Sounds like a smoking gun to me:

"It's been almost 10 days and today I lost most of my Favorites again."
"I run SpyBot about once a week."

Remember the user who could not figure out why she kept losing her AutoComplete entries? Spybot.

Hi, R2 ~

SpyBot won't touch favorites (*.urls). I think this still a strange occurrence.
