    Hi, Kb207 ~

Here is what you need to do:<UL><LI>Click on 'Tools' > 'Accounts...' > 'Properties' button > 'Advanced' tab<LI>Under the 'Delivery' section, put a checkmark in the box next to 'Leave a copy of messages on server'[/list]This will leave a copy of your messages on the server, but you need to know you probably have a limit as to the amount of MB you can hold in your account on the server before they start bouncing.

hotmail and msn are http. like imap, the mail remains on the server until you delete it.

    Kb ~

MaryJ is correct....your MSN/Homtmail messages will stay on the server until you delete them. Is your OE version xpsp 1.02828-1920 and does it not look like this?

hotmail (or any http acct) desn't have an advanced tab - since it doesn't use any of the options found on that tab.

    Hey MJ,
Along this same line.... Can you tell me how to go about changing an http mail account back to a POP3 setup ???
I just upgraded from an old 233 running Windows 98 with OE5.5, using MSN as my ISP and Outlook Express as my e-mail client, to a new system with an OEM installed version of XP Pro SP-1 with IE 6.0 and OE6 for e-mail. I was able to migrate most of my data and messages successfully to the new machine, but couldn't get my POP3 settings to take. MSN support set me up "temporarily" with this http mail and I really don't like it at all. Tech support is like Russian Roulette, so I thought I'd post here and see if the lounge can make some sense of this.

    Hi,

As you mentioned my OE version xpsp 1.02828-1920 and does it not look like your attachment? So i think that i can't do anything with hotmail. Does anybody know any other email service that i can use it in outlook or outlook express without any probs? <img src=/S/help.gif border=0 alt=help width=23 height=15>

You need to contact MS, they have to convert your account on their end, and stay away from that "ButterFly" Icon.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Thanks Dave !! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> I was kinda afraid that was the answer. I have contacted MS a few times on this issue and the first couple times they had "internal issues" (read virus infection) that prevented them from accessing my account. The last two times were simply tech support incompetence. The tech didn't know how and cut me off trying to transfer me, or just dropped the call, both times. Guess I'll give it another shot and <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

I thought once they were converted to http, that msn was not converting them back to pop any longer?

    Mary,
You may be correct, it has been a long time since I tried to help some one get their converted back.

    Hi Doc ~

This didn't convert either MSN nor Hotmail account to POP3. Despite the POP3 choice, it still went to 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp'. Do you know the exact hotmail POP3 server address, please?

    Hey Bruce !!
I'll have to check and post back. I got my fix direct from MSN support, but the tech said that it had been on their site for about 6 weeks and I could have gotten it there myself.

Re: receiving mails from MSN or Hotmail (OE 6.00.2800.1106/OS:XPHE)

    Hi kb,
It's been about 6 weeks, so I don't know if you are still interested in a new e-mail service or if you were fortunate enough to find that MS had posted "sometime in February" the steps to revert / convert your account to POP3. The process is EXACTLY the same as it was a few years ago when I created a document that walks you through the steps so I wouldn't have to go through "tech support hell" to get the information again. Unfortunately, the document with the enhanced screenshots is too large for the lounge. But here are the simple steps without the visual aids:

These directions should work for most recent Microsoft Outlook Express versions, running on Microsoft Windows 98 and later.

    Launch Outlook Express
    Under "Tools" select "accounts..."
    Select the "mail" tab.
If there is already an account and you are ready to change your email address,
Select the account by single-clicking on it.
    Click the "Properties" button.
Under Mail Account, type in the name you would like to refer to this account by.
    Name: <font color=red>Your name (i.e. John Doe or ACME Sales)</font color=red>
    Email address: <font color=red>email-address-you-selected@your-domain-name.com (i.e. john@thedoes.com or sales@acme.com) </font color=red>
Click the "Servers" tab and input these settings:
    Incoming mail ( <font color=red>POP3</font color=red> ) server: <font color=red>your-domain-name.com</font color=red>
    Outgoing mail ( <font color=red>SMTP</font color=red> ) server: <font color=red>use the current settings from your ISP (i.e. email.msn.com, mail.mindspring.com)</font color=red>
    Account Name: <font color=red>email-address-you-selected@your-domain-name.com (i.e. john@thedoes.com or sales@acme.com) </font color=red>
    Password: <font color=red>password-you-chose (case sensitive) </font color=red>
    Press <font color=red>"OK" </font color=red>
    Press <font color=red>"Close"</font color=red>

I'll work on making that document smaller and post it. It makes the change practically idiot proof. Please note that I said "practically". In computer work, Murphy's Law is applied liberally !!! <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>
