    Flashing Taskbar (2002)

I've recently seen two instances of Word 2002 displaying a flashing task bar when opening a file, specifically when opening a word file attachment to an e-mail and when performing a "save as" of an existing file after editing. In neither case does this behavior happen all the time, i.e. only some e-mail attachments provoke the behavior and some files are "saved as" successfully. In the attachment scenario the application is minimized and does not respond to attempts to maximize and continue. The "save as" problem leads to several clicks to cancel the operation and subsequent opening of the "save" dialogue box, after which the file can be successfully saved. I realize these may be two separate problems, but the commonality of the flashing taskbar, usually indicating that the application needs some form of user intervention, makes me think they may be two instances of the same underlying problem. Thanks.

This is probably related to the problem in <post#=226021>post 226021</post#>. See Andrew Lockton's reply lower in that thread.

    Re: Flashing Taskbar (2002)

Someone posted a question not long ago in one of the MS newsgroups about getting Word as a flashing taskbar button when a document was being opened via Explorer. One of the suggested possible causes was that Norton AV was interfering and the remedy suggested was to disable the Office Plug-in in Norton via Options/Miscellaneous.

The other suggested possible cause was that Word was being started from the Quick Launch toolbar and the suggested remedy was to apply SP1 and SP2 for Office XP.

I don't know if either of these may have relevance to your problem.

    Regards,
    Ed

    Re: Flashing Taskbar (2002)

We use Word XP on Win2000 - we are a law firm and also use GroupWise for document management. We experience what is called a "loss of focus" at times, when trying to open a file (it can happen with Excel & PPT too).

Your description sounds like our loss of focus. We have GroupWise already open (a must) and then open Word. We choose File, Open (or use button or CTRL + O). A GroupWise dialog box should appear so we can choose our document. Occasionally, the GroupWise dialog box does not appear, the GroupWise button on the Task Bar flashes, and the user must click the GroupWise button to force the GroupWise dialog box to appear.

I am an end-user support & training person, so I don't know the technical details behind this behavior, but I'd be happy to ask our tech guys and post their response.

The docs are not corrupt, and in our case GroupWise is performing fine. I seem to remember the tech guys saying this is a Windows 2000 issue which we can expect to disappear when we move up.

Is this reassuring? "The devil is in the details." <img src=/S/fire.gif border=0 alt=fire width=15 height=15>
