Word XP VERY slow (2002 sp2)

Thanks a lot for those who have been helping me through a bad
patch of WORD problems. It's all better but still have problems.
To cut to the chase, I've totally control panel removed OfficeXP
    and re-installed, renamed normal.dot as normal.old and a few
other helpful suggestions ... Thank you again!

But when I am editing a file and, say, put the cursor at a point
in a word, the program is apt to sit there for a little bit, the dread
(not responding) pops up on title bar and we play a little waiting
game. Usually, I win. That is, Word suddenly wakes up and we
do something else but it won't be but a few keystrokes before we
play that same game again. Yes, I've done detect and repair
several times. I've dutifully reported these incidents to MS and
I'm sure Bill Gates has his minions onworking.

    Shekerra,
Thank you. Hope i've done the right thing here. Attached is the
dump from the page you recommended be sent along. I took the
whole shootin' match, to Feb. 17th which is about when my
problems started. This WinXP pro and OfficeXP pro have
been doing fine for a year now but being very bad last week or so.

All the errors are too generic! Do you use Norton Antivirus? Adobe?
Another idea is to go to autoupdate (both for windows and office) and check your history to see if any patchesupdates failed.

Yes, I've got Norton Antivirus 2002. Going to autoupdate is a mystery but
I've got Woody's excellent Special Edition Using Office XP and I'm sure
there is a clue in there about what we're talking about. Tough when you
get old to remember what you learned the other day!

Checked your WOPR info and can recommend a trip to Hawaii to
get and stay warm. Our volcano took a turn for the better today
and there is great lava viewig. If you were here I'd definitely owe you a glass
    of good cabernet.

Guess I owe you that whether you're here or not!

    Aloha

Ahhh warm weather and good cabernet (sounds like my combo!)
My experience with Norton and Office XP was not promising. Outlook and word would hang/freeze all the time. I was repairing Outlook at least 2x per week. I finally removed Norton and replaced with Mcafee and rarely have any problems now.

Are the files on a network drive?

If they are, have a look at MSKB 322345

    Shekerra,

That rings a bell because WORD seems to 'reguest a virus scan' just about every time
a file is loaded. For a variety of reasons, I'm partial to Norton in the virus race but just
maybe it would be wise to disable "Auto-Protect" when I'm working on my own files. Does
that fit in with your comment?

    Shekerra,

I disabled auto-protect and Word worked as I think it should. I'll wait a day or
two before organizing a parade. It makes sense that "Requesting a virus scan"
-- now gone -- is a clue that something was going on that isn't needed. If my
count is right, I now owe you TWO glasses of fine cabernet sauvignon and it
better be a good vintage! You can visit our volcano at my web site,

    Bryan,

In this case, no. Everything is on C: but the thought is promising for those on nets.
