    Footers appearing centered (Word 2000 - SR1)

    I am trying to run a template which was created in Word XP. When I open the template, the footers for the second page of sections appears in the center of the page. Different first page is checked for each section and same as previous has been removed. Has anyone encountered this before and is there any way to fix it? Thanks.

    Can you upload a document to the Lounge for us to look at it? When you say the center, I assume that you're talking vertically. Did you look at the margins for the footer under Page Setup?

    Thanks for your reply. Yes, I do mean vertically - as in, the footer appears in the middle of the page instead of at the bottom. Margins are set for .5" for both header and footer, and 1" for top and bottom, so I don't believe that's that problem. I will upload a copy, but keep in mind that it appears correctly on machines running Word 2002. Thanks again for your assistance.

    It looks OK in Word 97. Footers appear where they should, at 0.5 inch from the bottom of the page throughout the document, both on screen and on paper.

    Hi:

    Running 2000 and the same thing occurred on my machine. I was able to fix it by going into the footer and after the page number, insert another return then re-inserting the pathname code, then moving cursor down 1 line to the 2nd pathname code and deleting entire line. It would not let me delete the para symbol and code from the newly inserted line. I did this on all footers and all was then ok.

    Re: Footers appearing centered (Word 2000 - SR1)

    Hi Caniac:
    Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner. I started to post a response this morning, but I was late for my train. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> I got the same result as Leanne. If I select the filename field in the footer & press Shift+F9, alternating between showing the field codes & the result, the footer size will jump. If I select it & go to paragraph formatting, I notice that there are 3 points of space above & below. I can get rid of the strange behavior by:
    1. Deleting & replacing the filename field;
    2. Removing the space after in the filename field.

    I am not sure what happened to cause this, however. It does seem that there is some corruption.

    Hi Phil:
    Thank you for your reply. I tried what Leanne suggested and it worked fine. I'm a little nervous, though, about the possibility of corruption. This is a new template which is in the process of being developed. I was actually beta testing it when I encountered the footer problem. Do you think that since the footers now work, everything is fine? We are going to be distributing this template to a wide variety of users (some with very little Word expertise).

    Re: Footers appearing centered (Word 2000 - SR1)

    Hi Caniac:
    I think you're OK, but I'm not positive. This is the first time that I've encountered that problem & could find nothing listed in the knowledge base regarding it. I just tried it in Word 97 & could not reproduce the problem (unfortunately, I don't have access to 97 & 2000 at the same time). The more I look at it, the more I think it's not a corruption. It's more a bug.

    Here's why. I recall in Word 2000 that, under Tools/Compatibility Options, there is an option for something like HTML autospacing paragraphs. When I get rid of the 3 points of space after in the filename field (in Word 2000), I don't get the stange behavior. In Word 97, the space below is suppressed & so there is no problem. I'll bet that if you changed your compatibility options (Word 2000) regarding the HTML autospace options, the problem would also go away.

    What puzzles me is my 3 points below changes the size of the footer, & only when you have field codes off (or is it on, I forget). <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

    The more I played with the document the more messed up it got. In the footer for section 5, I toggled the display of field codes a few times, then cut and re-pasted the field. I managed somehow to get the text of the next section's header into the section 5 footer. I decided to give up.

    You might want to apply the Footer style to your footers rather than Normal. Not that there is a dramatic difference, but it might help reduce direct formatting (e.g., left/center/right tab settings) which can eliminate some random problems.

    Phil-
    Thank you again. I did not have time last week to try what you suggested in regard to the HTML autospace option, but I hope to get back to the template either today or tomorrow as time permits.

    Re: Footers appearing centered (Word 2000 - SR1)

    Hi Caniac,

    I've been looking at your document template [I'm running Win/Office XP] and note the following regarding section 2:

    <UL><LI>margins are set top and bottom at 24points from edge of page;
    <LI>paper sizing is 1" top and bottom
    <LI>headers and footers set for 0.5 from top of page
    <LI>table height is set as 8.16": ( I'm assuming 8 1/2" x 11" paper size);[/list]It would be my guess that the conflict is with the table properties.

    What about trying this: eliminate the table altogether and create a 'title cover page' style, format that style with points before and after to center it nicely on the page, rather than use a table with hard returns after "Report" and "Document Title"/or maybe just for that page have the vertical alighment [page layout] centered?
