Repeating characters (XL2K SR1)

In the old Lotus 1-2-3... you used to be able to put a repeating character in a cell (I think this was it)... that is... if you proceeded a character with then it would repeat endlessly within the cell so that no matter how wide the cell was, the cell was always filled with that character. Is there such a thing in Excel?

format->cells...->alignment->text alignment (horizontal)->fill.
