Delete a Profile

I have a client starting to use his Palm III and my boss tested his serial cradle to verify it was good and in the process created a profile (my term) called "test". Now the Palm displays the word "test" near the upper right portion of the display on the Palm. Short of a hard reset, is there a way to remove or delete this "test" identify?

    Thanks,

    Jester

It depends on what you're trying to achieve. Each Palm device can synchronize with one profile at a time, and all of the programs and data are associated with that profile. I'm honestly not sure what you're talking about when you talk about the username "test" appearing on the Palm display, but I assume that right now the Palm is syncing with "test" and not with the username you'd like it to.

Searching Palm's support library and a quick google didn't give me answers on deleting a profile and it's been a long time since I've had to do so, but here's my suggestion:

Perform a hard reset to wipe the Palm clean (remember, everything's on your desktop so this is absolutely no biggie at all).

Perform a sync, selecting the right username as the profile to sync with.

Open the Palm folder in Explorer (by default, C:Palm) and move the "test" username folder into another directory altogether (this is you cleverly backing it up).

Make copy of file users.dat and rename it to users.old. (You're being clever with a back-up again.)

Open users.dat with notepad and remove the line of gobbledegook pertaining to the "test" username.

Sync again. If anything blows up, delete the modified users.dat and rename users.old to users.dat. Try again.[/list]YMMV, and perhaps someone else will jump in with confirmation of these steps or a better method. However, don't be afraid of the hard reset - it's the Palm techie's best friend.

Let us know how it goes!

    Re: Delete a Profile

Thanks for the confirmation of what I had heard.

Same advice I found at Palm in their knowledgebase.

Got rid of "test" by hard reset and using copying the data into the correct profile.

    Thanks again....

Hi Jester, I notice that you have found a solution. If it ever happens again try this neat, simple, free utility found at PalmGear.

    http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftw...558&prodID=2456

Tis a product called ChangeName that I have used with success.

    Cheers,
    Regards,
    Bob

Thanks Bob.... and I note your flags of choice!

Now that I have this utility, I will probably never need it. That is a law which appears to be as constant as the natural laws.
