Compact Deleted Inbox (Outlook Express 6)

I thought I read one of Woody's e-mags about this but can't find the article, and, of course, now I'm desperate. I swear I was just trying to compact all folders and the next thing I know, my Inbox messages have been deleted. Is there any possible way to recover? Is there something I did wrong or could have done to prevent this?
    Help

    Hi Steve,
Exactly WHAT did you do ??? Difficult to diagnose a problem when all you have is the result. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>
eg. - Did you open Outlook Express and click on Tools / Options and select the Maintenance tab from the Options window and then select "Compact all messages in the background" or did you click on the "Clean Up Now" button on that page ??? Also were you using your Inbox to store all your messages or did you move them, after reading, to a separate folder created for storage and safe-keeping ???

Re: Compact Deleted Inbox (Outlook Express 6)

Ok, I guess some information would be helpful :-)
I was in Outlook Express, and actually looking the recent downloading postings from a microsoft newsgroup. Since those groups get large, I decided it was time to compact folders, which I do from time to time. But I guess I did something different than just the clicking on File, Folder, Compact All. I right clicked on the newsgroup to bring up the Properties selection of that menu, then clicked on Local File. I saw that I had some "wasted space" so, and this is what I recall doing, I clicked on Compact. Honestly, I don't know what difference it would make to my INBOX even if I would have clicked on Delete??? But, after clicking on Compact, and think I got out of Outlook Express, did some other computer work. Came back later, and went into my Inbox and saw that dreaded "Welcome to Outlook Express 6" message.

Normally, I move some messages that I get in the Inbox to separate folders, and those messages are still there. My fuzzy memory seems to recall that one of Woody's ezines had an article about Outlook (Express?) regarding the size of the dbx files and what could happen to them if they got too big. So far, I have searched in vain for the article.

And yes, there were important emails in that Inbox and yes, I am not looking into backing up files--i knew better.

Does this help clarify? Any help at all is appreciated.
    Steve

    Big Steve ~

This is one thread which addresses the means of renaming the extension from '.dbx' to '.bak' to resolve this.
