Removed External Hard Drive (Win XP Pro)

Hey guys I removed my External USB Hard drive and every time I reboot it starts looking for it and trying to install drivers. And of course if I cancel out , Device Manager it Shows a yellow mark beside Universal Serial Bus(USB) Controller. If I let it try and find the drivers(of course I know it won't) Divice Manager shows a yellow mark beside Maxtor PCI To USB Enhanced Host Controller. How do I stop it for looking for something thats not even hooked up any more?

    Hi, Cowboy ~

Have you tried right-clicking on the device with the yellow question mark and selecting 'Uninstall' in Device Manager?

Re: Removed External Hard Drive (Win XP Pro)

Yeah I did that a couple of times, but everytime I reboot it just comes right back. The only way I have been able to stop it from trying to install on reboot is to Disable it instead of uninstall. But that bugs me to have that entry with the red X on it in device manager. I just can't understand why it's looking for a device thats no longer hooked up. I'm sure there is an entry in the register thats causing it to try and reload it but can & how & which one do you remove from the registry. I found the entry in registry that i'm pretty sure deals with that but i'm afraid to remove it. Here are some snapshots of those registry entries.

    Hey Cowboy,
When you've got the drive attached does Windows Explorer treat it as a removable device - if you right click is there an 'eject' option? If so, try that before unhooking it. If not check what options are available when you right click - may give you a hint.

Try opening the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the systray, and disconnect from there and then remove the hardware. This is what this ICON is all about.

Re: Removed External Hard Drive (Win XP Pro)

Too late. The External was an internal drive in an External USB box. I have already removed the Hard Drive from the box and installed it in my computer. Put the box up in the closet. Is there something else I can do to stop it from trying to load it when I reboot now? Or am I just out of luck unless I remove it from my computer and go thru all the crap of making it an External again? It just seems to me that there has to be something I can go in and delete , change, or remove somewhere in the system. Any help would be appreciated.

Was there any third party software you had to install to get this to work in the first place? If so, do a uninstall.

Re: Removed External Hard Drive (Win XP Pro)

Just tried it and it tried to reload the dad blasted thing again. I can disable it and it doesn't try to reload on a reboot but thats the only thing that works so far. But I don't want the stupid thing in my device manager with that Red X on it. Drives me crazy.
