What is in the 'TO' line when sent to distribution (Outlook 2000)

I hope I can explain this so it is understandable. I am working on disaster planning for my company and was trying to figure out how to notify people of an emergency, such as a fire at headquarters that happened on a weekend. Instead of doing a telephone tree to notify people of an emergency, I thought of sending a short message service (SMS text) message to the cell phones of all senior management, as they all have cell phones provided by the company. (SMS can be sent cell phone to cell phone, or it can be sent as an internet email. Most carriers now have systems in place so that a message can be sent either way to your own or any other carrier).

I did an Outlook distribution list which has 20 senior managers on it with their cell phone text message address, e.g. 5551234567@att.mobile.net. This is about 25 characters per addressee. I know that SMS has a limit of about 160 characters and that the address is included in the character count. What I need to know is how Outlook outputs a message addressed to a distribution list (sent by the internet and thus going outside the LAN mail server). With our Exchange server, when I address an email to a distribution list, it shows the distribution list name in the

correction. the message as read on my cell phone does not have a "To" line at all, only a "From" line. Of course, what is displayed by the cell phone is determined by the cell phone OS. That doesn't mean that the SMS message doesn't have the "To" information in it using up the limited characters.

I tested with my AT&T Wireless account and I get 160 characters total, including the sender's address and subject line and body. This doesn't change if I add a second or third address to the "To" field; I assume AT&T is simply ignoring those so it can pack in as much of the body as possible. So you should be okay, although a test, like a fire drill, should be done periodically.

Now, for my wish: I wish that SMS had a timestamp so I could tell when a message came in.

Note: This test was conducted with a standard SMTP server and not with Exchange, but I don't see why that should matter unless Exchange is reformatting the message for the target platform.

Thanks. I tried some more testing and got the same number of characters in the message with three addressees and with four, so it does look like this is a good way to quickly get the word out when there is an emergency.

I have AT&T Wireless service and a Panasonic Allure handset. I get a time stamp at the beginning of each message. Your lack of a time stamp is either network specific or it could be, I guess, the way your handset is programmed to display messages. I'm in Legal, not Engineering, so that is the extent of my expertise.

It probably is this old Nokia 8260 handset. I'd toss it, but I'm waiting for the next big free upgrade offer. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Attorneys are a dime a dozen. Somebody that understands the innards of MS Office, now THAT is a useful person.
