Windows Explorer has encountered a problem... (XP)

While using various Word files from a Windows 2000 server, a user gets the message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close..." There is the code 0xc0000005. It also says "The following files will be included in this error report: appcompat.txt." By the time I tried to look at the file it was gone. The user is opening the files from within Explorer. When he opens the file within Word it works fine.

    Ideas?

    Jane,
A search on that error code came up with a number of "hits", but one in particular seemed to be close to what you describe.

The symptoms are that of a homepage hijacker putting restrictions on your PC. In fact,
numerous people have had this problem in the last serveral days, and in all cases,
    it was related to <font color=red>Xupiter homepage hijacker</font color=red> .

Try this first and see if the problems are still there. If so, then post back and
someone will try to help. (Spybot is an excellent program to use these days, regardless.)

Download and run SpyBot Search and Destroy: http://spybot.safer-networking.de/

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
    Today it is called golf!
