    Backup software: Dantz Retrospect Professional

Comments on suitability of Dantz Retrospect Professional in both Win 2000 and Win XP?

I do not yet have the critter, but I am attracted by the stated ability to create a bootable CD-ROM with Retrospect that would enable me to restore a system from an external, say, USB drive.

Re: Backup software: Dantz Retrospect Professional

I'm not a user per se, but I can tell you that Retrospect has been used for two or three years now at the place where I work and the two guys who are responsible for it (doing workstations and servers) have nothing but favorable comments. One of the guys gave me enough of a familiarity tutorial so that I could swap out the destination hard drives once a week if he's not going to be present. They have two "destination" machines, with hard drives in removable trays - one for workstations and the other for servers. I'm afraid I don't know any more than that - other than the fact that those backups have "saved the bacon" on a number of occasions!

Edited to add: I should have said that Retrospect is running on a Win2K machine and the machines on the LAN being backed up run the gamut of 2K, XP, 98SE and maybe even a WinME machine or two.....

I'm with you Dave thats why I use Drive Image, does everything a personal computer user would ever need, at a fraction of the cost. Will make an exact copy of your Hard Drive including OS, or will do a back up Image Compressed how ever you want it. And several other things. My system is set up for duel boot because I made an exact copy of my Hard Drive using Drive Image. Also have another copy that I keep put up just in case. But if you have the Money, go for it.

If being used with servers, your place is likely using the server editions of Retrospect.

Retrospect Pro is limited to 2 Client licenses, i.e., a total of 2 systems, tho I believe extra licenses may be purchased.

Those are the prices direct from Dantz.

    Much cheaper from online vendors.

The latest issue of The Naked PC Newsletter reviews both Maxtor's external hard drive and Dantz Retrospect.
I would guess that the newsletter is available at http://www.thenakedpc.com/.

It was included free with the Yamaha CD/RW I brought about 6 weeks ago. Haven't tried it yet though.
