    Jules,
Don't panic. You aren't providing us much information. Were that to happen to me, I'd probably turn off the machine for a minute and restart it. Given the same message, put in the system disk and boot from that. THEN do what the system says next. XP Pro has a lot of ability to fix itself in situations and I haven't the foggiest notion what the extent of that ability is. But it's large and reassuring. If you don't get any positive results, get back online here and provide some more details. What were you doing when this happened is a good place to start. <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20>

Did you accidentally leave a floppy in the drive?

Re: boot disk failure (xp pro)

Hello again, sorry I didn't get back yesterday! I took your advice - didn't panic - did a restart and the system seemed ok - thanks everyone for the input. I hadn't left a floppy in the drive - neither had I made any changes that I was aware of.
Unfortunately today is worse! This mornings the message was:
First boot - some message about disk failure
Second boot - 'file missing or corrupt - <Windows root>system32ntoskrnl.exe' windows can't start
Third boot - ' a disk read error occured'
Oh no! - I don't have a boot disk - should ntoskrnl.exe be on the original xp disk? I'm still very new to xp - and it is a bit scary!
(by the way he is a she!)
    Thanks

Hi jules, First, you do have a good backup right? Second, could be anything such as a cable loose, a power supply problem,or a bad disk drive, etc., etc.. Any strange noises emanating from the PC? Is the PC still under warranty? If so, contact the vendor immediately. If you are OK with checking the inside of the PC, I'd check to make sure all the cables are attached correctly. If you have a backup you could try to restore from the backup. An XP system restore is not a complete backup/restore solution. If only backs up critical files so you can revert to an earlier known good system when you install new software, patches, or hardware.

Hi Joe, no I don't have a good backup! (even though i should know better). No strange noises - and yes the PC is still under warranty. If I do an XP system restore - what happens to my data?

    Jules,
Your data should be fine. The XP restore will only restore system files and settings and not touch user data. If you get lucky enough to get the system to boot again you should at least backup your data ASAP. Then I'd contact the vendor for help.
