It's frustrating that the Lounge has to defer to IE in matters such as functionality of 1-click tags. The random incompatibilities of IE and Netscape are a constant source of confusion to me. I have a fairly simple web page that I try to keep plain vanilla to avoid conflicts of this nature but there are probably some that I don't know about. I use FrontPage2002.

Can any Loungers give me a short explanation for these incompatibilities with some insight for basic understanding? It would be much appreciated even out here in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Don't know that I want to go to that extreme ! Maybe you could rename it "Continental" or something. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

Why bend to the majority? Why not code to the standards?

That way when your page doesn't display correctly you can complain to MS or NS and say "It's standards compliant. Fix your <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> browser".

Maybe if more people realised there are web standards, coded to the standards and complained when the browser doesn't handle standards correctly, this <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> Browser war wouldn't be an issue.

If you want to look at the web standards, goto http://w3.org.

    There I feel better now.

Probably because there are too many so called "web designers" out there that don't have the faintest clue as to the existence of standards or what they might be anyway. <img src=/S/notmyfault.gif border=0 alt=notmyfault width=15 height=15>

Sorry, I may have misunderstood your post, it seemed to advocate to code to MS standards.

    Let's just say, it's been a TYPICAL Monday <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15> <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23> <img src=/S/igiveup.gif border=0 alt=igiveup width=31 height=23> <img src=/S/surrender.gif border=0 alt=surrender width=31 height=23> <img src=/S/flee.gif border=0 alt=flee width=25 height=25>

Thankfully it's time to go home.

You don't really think that MS & Netscape would get together and say "lets make both programs work together smoothly"? They would have to throw a little glitch in here and there just to make the differences show up. Since IE is the majority browser, you have to bend to the majority, I guess. <img src=/S/surrender.gif border=0 alt=surrender width=31 height=23>

No problem, Bryan. I certainly don't advocate bowing low to MS or any other overbearing type.
    Relax, go home and as Cowboy said, have a <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16> on me. Tuesday will be better. <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>

I wouldn't call it deference... Recent versions of IE offer in-text-area-insertion-point-position control, and other browsers don't. In the old days, all 1-click tag pairs got inserted at the end of the message box for all browsers, but it was a really great convenience to be able to insert them at the insertion point, so we implemented it. Maybe some day this will all be standardized and that degree of control will be implemented in other browsers. Until then, should we not make life a bit easier for those users for whom we can do so?
