Images Printing Upside Down (Word 2000 SR1)

I have a mystery for you....
A user is opening a Word document in Word 2000 (I think the original document was created in Word 97, but now we are using Word 2000). The document, a training manual, has some inserted .bmp images -- mostly screen shots of command buttons (like the SAVE icon, etc.) within the instruction steps. Everything looks fine on the document when viewed on the screen, however, when printing, the bitmap images are printing upside down!. I have tried sending it to two different network printers, and it has the same result on each (these are not the same type printer either, so it isn't a printer driver issue).

This only happens to the user who is printing it from her Windows XP Pro box, Word 2000. A co-worker of hers, on a Windows 98 box, Word 2000, does not have any problem printing the same file (it is on a shared network drive).

Any one have ANY clues about this? I have searched the microsoft knowledge base, and find some stuff on PowerPoint reversing in 2002, but nothing that describes a problem where it is only upside down when printing, not viewing.

    Tracy,

Can you post a stripped down version for us to look at? Something like a page or two that shows this.

    Sure Bryan,
I stripped it from 65 pages down to 3, but this should give you an idea. The large screen shot on the page, also a .bmp, prints fine. But the small images of the icons (like "inbox" or "New") print upside down for her. The look fine on the screen, and in print preview mode.

    Tracy,

I just tried printing with Word 2K on Win2K and it came out fine.

I'll look at it tonight at home where I haveXPP and W2K.

At first look here, there doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary. The only difference between the images (the large screenshot and the button images) is the large one is an attached image, whereas the others are embeded right in the Word doc.

Other than that, I'm at a loss. Like I said, I'll look at it at home tonight and let you if I find anything.

Maybe I should clarify as well -- it prints fine for ME too -- running Win XP Pro with Word 2000 SP1. It is only for this one user that this document is behaving in this way. I have visited her station and checked everything I can think of.....

    Hi Tracy:
I printed it fine in Word 97. However, then I double clicked the image to edit it. It was a mirror image & rotated 180 degrees. When I changed it (mirror image & rotate 180), it still printed in the same fashion (except it was too large). I haven't figured out the cause yet.

OK. I just tried it and low and behold I have messed up images.

They aren't upside down, but flipped across the vertical axis. Minor difference, I know, but when you said upside down, I expected images that were rotated 180 degrees.

When I print the document to my printer, it shows this behaviour, but when I print to Adobe Acrobat Distiller, the images are fine. <img src=/S/sigh.gif border=0 alt=sigh width=15 height=15>

I'm really at a loss. It probably has something to do with what Phil mentioned <!post=here,231169>here<!/post>. I get the same thing.

The only thing I can recommend now is to recreate the troublesome images.

One last idea is to trya nd track down the differences between the two workstations (yours and the one where you get the inverted images)? Not in terms of a setting, but things like XPP SP1 or not Office SR1,2, 3... That kind of thing. I'm running XPP SP1, Office 2K SP3.

    Tracy,
It's your images. They were indeed created mirrored and upside down. You can confirm
this by simply opening them for editing in place (you need an image editor other than Word).

My guess is they appear fine in the document because Word's drawing layer tools were used
at one time to size, position and orient the images. If you just re-do them (mirror, rotate and size)
    they'll be fine.
