Automatic Style Updates in XP (Word XP)

I have templates with specific styles that I imported into WORD XP from Word 2000. It seems that when I try to highlight a word that already has a style attached to it, and I change the format of the word, XP creates a new style using the updated font. For example, if I have a style called Body Text (TNR, 10pt, indented .03) and I try to apply that style to a word that is in Courier New font, XP automatically creates a style called Body text + Courier new.

I DON'T WANT this to happen. When I look at word help, it says I should be able to right click on the style and choose delete and the style will be deleted, and the text replaced with WORD normal formatting. This also does not happen. Can anyone help? I would just like to apply formatting to text, and have the text assume the new formatting without creating a new style.

Thanks. I really wish the search feature here was easier to use...
