Header Help (2002 v 97)

Header behavior appears inconsistent in Word 97 and XP:

In Word 97, if the header is empty and I click View | HeaderFooter
the text in the document layer just below the header area jumps
down to make room for the header - even if there is no header text,
one paragraph mark appears in the header (which cannot be deleted).
Then, when I close the header view the document layer text jumps
back up to fill the space where header text would be if there were
any header text. In other words, that un-deleteable paragraph mark
has been overlayed by the document layer text and the document layer
text is butt up against the Top margin.

In Word 2002, that space occupied byt the one undeleteable paragraph
mark does not "close up" when I close header view. The document
layer text does not jump back up to fill the empty header space, and the
document text does not line up against the Top Margin -- it's one para-
graph height from the top margin (in this case 12 pt.)

Margin settings for the sections are identical in both 97 and XP version
of the template. In fact, it's the exact same template!

Can anyone shed some light on what's happening and how to fix?

Phil,

Try this:

Set your Section 1 Top Margin to, say, 0.3.
Then View | Header. Did the document text
dim and jump down to make room for the header?

(Edited by Phil Rabichow on 03-Mar-03 14:40. figured out why you can see the paragraph mark with the header closed)
Hi Kevin:
I can't shed any light on XP, but in both 97 & 2000, I do not get the behavior that you describe. That is, if I open the Header/Footer, the body text doesn't move...it just dims. It may appear to move if the Header/Footer toolbar is docked at the top, but it shouldn't move.

e.g. in Page Layout view, I opened the Header/Footer after moving the toolbar to floating. I can see the same amount of text on my screen (i.e. the last line). The only thing different is that I can see the header paragraph mark.

I just noticed that on some documents, I can see a dimmed paragraph mark in the header & some I can't (all Page Layout view). Never noticed that before.

Later:
OK. If you open a blank header & "delete" the paragraph mark, it doesn't disappear while the header is open. When you close it, the deleted paragraph mark disappears.

Hi Kevin:
OK, I understand now. If your top margin is less than your header margin, then the text will jump down & make room for the header when it's open.

Re: Header Help (2002 v 97)

I think I see what's happening: your confirmation would be
greatly appreciated:

Word 2002 (and maybe 2000) add up the header margin
and top margin and position the text accordingly:

Set Section 1 Header to .2
Set Section 1 Top margin to .3

you get a top margin at .4 -->Some kind of strange math going on here.

Header .5, top margin .3 --> text starts at .7 ??

Word 97
Set Section 1 Header to .5
Set Section 1 Top Margin to .3

you get a top margin of .3 -->Changing the From Edge for the header
does not change the vertical start position of the text.

Re: Header Help (2002 v 97)

Hi Kevin:
I get the same for 97. No access to 2000 right now. I wonder if Tools/Options/ something about auto spacing paragraphs (or something HTML paragraph auto spacing?) has any affect on this. I know that it changes space above or space below starting with Word 2000.
