Screen refresh (2000)

I am running Win98SE and Office 2000. If I have a document open in Word 2000 and the monitor turns off because of my screen settings after a time of inactivity, when I reactivate the monitor by moving the mouse a 7 appears where my cursor last was. Why is this and what can be done to stop it?

This is a new one on me.

I suppose I'd also try cleaning the keyboard, but then I would expect other symptoms.[/list]

Yes, it seems to happen each time I have a Word document open when my screen goes blank. No-one else has access to the machine. Yes, the PC is networked to another but it is on the same desk and no-one is using the other one when this happens. Yes, the "7" does print. I have just re-created the problem as I write this. I had a document open, the screen went blank, I moved the mouse and a seven appeared where the cursor was. I printed the document with the "7" in place.

I have just noticed it happens with Excel, too. I had a spreadsheet open and when I refrehsed the screen the contents of the active cell had bee replaced with a "7".

I would be disabling the software that blanks your screen. It sounds like it is firing a keystroke either when the screen goes black or when it reactivates. Perhaps there is other software to do the same thing that doesn't show the bug.

As Andrew said, the software might be firing a keystroke. Another possibility is that you have speech recognition software, although I suppose it's less likely because you would probably get random numbers & letters. Or something infrared that is typing a seven??

Yes, I could disable what you call the software. It is just the energy saving settings in the standard Win98SE Display Properties.

I wonder if you'd have any more luck on the Windows board, since this is happening in more than one application, it's not a problem with Word. You could probably verify that this would happen with notepad open.
