Trouble Deleting Items from Startup (XP Pro)

I am still having a problem trying to delete items from the startup tab in msconfig. When I unselect an item, upon the system restarting I get a message that the system has started in diagnostic or selective startup mode. Next, I get the System Configuration Utility screen showing me the computer is running in selective startup. I have attached a file with a copy of the screens. What do I do to be able to unselect an item and start up normally?
Thanks, as always!

Hi Cherie,
First, I assume you checked the box saying "don't show this, etc."
I also had posted a thread on this problem quite a while ago, which turned out to be my old friend, Windows prefetch folder contents.(which I deleted and the message went away. You can do a search on it to get the details if you want, but that was the gist of it.
BTW, the msconfig feature is really only meant to disable things in the startup sequence, usually for troubleshooting purposes, temporarily. If you want a GOOD utility that does disable or delete things in the startup function, (amongst MANY other usefull things like cleanup if junk files and registry..Safely), go to http://www.iolo.com and download System Mechanic. I highly recommend it and you can get a version to try. I ended up buying it at a minimal price. It's worth it.

When you make changes in MSCONFIG you are presented with that reminder screen when you reboot, but ordinarily all you have to do at that time is to check the box not to show the screen in the future and it won't bother you any more. If at some time you make MORE changes, that screen will popup again on reboot, but once again checking the box makes it go away on further reboot. I was unable to open your attachment, so I don't know what screenshots you had in there. I had trouble with Acrobat Reader. You might checkout how to make screenshots appear in your post.

Bob,
I did not know that msconfig was not used to permanently delete startup programs but I am thrilled to actually find the way to do I. I downloaded the software you suggested and had a great time cleaning up! Thanks for everything.

Al,
Please tell me where to look to find out how to make screenshots appear directly in the post. It would be so much easier that way.

For another startup-manager utility, I like the Startup Control Panel. It's very easy to use, and will adapt itself to fit whatever Windows OS you happen to be using. And as a nice safety feature you can 'delete' startup items but keep them in the program's Deleted section for easy restoration if necessary.
