    Word 2000 toolbars in IE (Office 2000 SR1)

    Can I pose one more problem with the Web toolbar? I have disabled it as described, and this does stop it from appearing in Word. However, if you open a Word Document from Internet Explorer (eg if one is on a web page), then it hides half of your toolbars in Word. When you restart Word, the toolbars are back to normal, but it is annoying!

    Anyone got a solution for this?

    I never open Word documents in the browser window, so I don't know how much control you have over that. Can you access the Customize... dialog and show the toolbars? I'm not sure this change would be saved, but with some registry/file system monitoring software, maybe one could figure out where the settings are coming from...

    Hi Marie:
    When you open a document in IE, I think it keeps the IE toolbars. I haven't tried this, but I think you can open it in Word itself by choosing Edit with Word from the File menu. If not, you might search on the IE board.
    Cheers,

    Have you tried clicking the tools button on the Internet Explorer toolbar, this shows the word toolbars for me.

    Thanks for all your suggestions. The problem seems to be the button on the Web toolbar called

    "Show only Web toolbar".

    Is there a way in Word to set this button to FALSE? I can't determine programmatically if it has been set to true, or false.

    Re: Word 2000 toolbars in IE (Office 2000 SR1)

    Actually, you can determine whether the button is pushed in, but not by accessing the object as a CommandBarControl, only by accessing it as a CommandBarButton. If you run this procedure with the button not pushed in, you get the results as in the following table:

    <pre>Sub ListControls()
    Dim cbCtrl As CommandBarControl, cbBtn As CommandBarButton
    For Each cbCtrl In CommandBars("Web").Controls
    If cbCtrl.Type = msoControlButton Then
    Set cbBtn = cbCtrl
    'Debug.Print cbCtrl.Caption, cbCtrl.ID
    Debug.Print cbBtn.Caption, cbBtn.ID, cbBtn.State
    End If
    Next</pre>

    <table width=60%><td width=60%>&Back</td><td width=30%>1017</td><td width=10%>0</td><td>&Forward</td><td>1018</td><td>0</td><td>&Stop Current Jump</td><td>1019</td><td>0</td><td>&Refresh Current Page</td><td>1020</td><td>0</td><td>&Start Page</td><td>1016</td><td>0</td><td>Search the &Web</td><td>1922</td><td>0</td><td>&Show Only Web Toolbar</td><td>1023</td><td>0</td></table>
    Click the button in and run it again:

    <table width=60%><td width=60%>&Back</td><td width=30%>1017</td><td width=10%>0</td><td>&Forward</td><td>1018</td><td>0</td><td>&Stop Current Jump</td><td>1019</td><td>0</td><td>&Refresh Current Page</td><td>1020</td><td>0</td><td>&Start Page</td><td>1016</td><td>0</td><td>Search the &Web</td><td>1922</td><td>0</td><td>&Show Only Web Toolbar</td><td>1023</td><td>-1</td></table>
    So you can interrogate - and change - the button state if you like:

    <pre>Sub ClearWebOnly()
    Dim cbBtn As CommandBarButton
    Set cbBtn = CommandBars.FindControl(ID:=1023)
    If cbBtn.State = msoButtonDown Then
    cbBtn.Execute
    End If
    Set cbBtn = Nothing
    End Sub</pre>

    Hope this works for your context.

    You can run a registry hack detailed in this microsoft KB article that forces a Word document to open outside of IE.

    This cures it for me.

    Andrew

    I think it is a great idea to force it open Word documents outside IE. I tried the suggested solution, but it didn't seem to work. We are using Windows XP. Have you got any suggestions?

    From memory, on XP machines there is an option in the Internet Explorer Options that you can tick to do the same thing. Have a look in there and see if you can find something about "Browse Office Documents in Same Window" or a related title.

    Oddly, MS added "Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 for Windows XP" to the list at the top, but then didn't create a section of the document that addresses XP. Bad mistake.

    Well, if it works like Windows 2000, you go into Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types, select DOC, click Advanced and then:

    Phil,

    Strange. My screenshot was from IE 6.0 SP1 running on Windows XP SP1. What versions are you running?

    Hi Stuart:
    I'm running IE6. I have the latest SP, I think; I don't have access to it right now. But I'm on Win98 SE. However, I wouldn't think that would affect IE--maybe I'm wrong.
