Streaming Audio/Video Bandwidth Useage

A search of Google Teoma, Alta Vista and Vivisimo without finding any usable info on this.

I am hoping that one of the Loungers just may have this already, if not don't worry, I can tackle my problem from another direction.

Background: I'm running a Network of 60 PCs. I have just discovered a number of users running streaming audio over this network and want to put a stop to it. I'm concerned about bandwidth, not time wasting - that is their bosses' problem.

I would like to know just how much bandwidth streaming audio could use. I know there are a variety of flavors, and methods so I will assume a worst case scenario.

Any info will be gratefully received, all I ask is don't sweat it. If you have the info, great. If not then that is ok, I can live without it.

TIA,
Granville

There really isn't a limit to bandwidth usage. If you have a 100base-T network with a T-1 internet line, your bottleneck is the T-1, so your bandwidth for streaming max would be 1.5 mbs. (Also considering the upload speed of the server the media is stored on, that may slow it more) We used to allow steaming but when you have 900 users stramng over 6 T's, it tend to slow stuff down. It can be turned off at any decent firewall.

Not sure if this is the exact answer you were looking for...

Thanks, Mike.

That makes sense, but I don't think I'd be able to sell it with the political situation. The semi-computer literate CEO who is/was a great fan of Napster and a Group IT Manager without the teeth to do the job properly. But that's our, internal, problem.

I had NetStats Live from AnalogX which has given me some facts I can use. Again, not exactly what I was hoping for but useful enough when I present it in the proper light.

You wanna sell it.. hehe no prob. you can give the CEO access to napster, thats not a problem, When your gonna present it, have a bunch of people stream video from CNN or something and then have him TRY to d/l something. When he gets no bandwidth or it takes 30 min to d/l a song, he'll think about it.. (i know the pol. games, I play them myself at work)
