Tab stop - Bar (Word 2002)

    Well, I've run across another problem I can't solve...and I'm teaching a Word class!
When I set a Bar Tab stop, it deletes the default Tab Stops off the Ruler, but when I press the Tab key, it still stops every .05 inch. My typing does not line up with the Bar. I can't figure it out. Can anyone help me?

I am running Windows ME; however, I also tried this at school and the computer there runs Windows 2000. Word 2002 is installed at both locations.

    Thanks.

Setting tabs is like sitting in a ceiling-seeking car - drives you up the wall!
Maybe this article will provide the answers: Setting tabs

Edited: Forgot to say that I looked at you .doc and found the same thing as you - default 0.5" tab stops, despite clearing All

    Hi Barbara:
A bar tab just puts a vertical line at a tab stop position the length of a paragraph. You can't tab to it, at least not through Word 2000. It's probably most useful if you have columns & want a line between them.

    Thank you, Phil ,
I have decided to just ignore the bar tab. My class of senior citizen students got a big laugh yesterday when I said I wanted to teach them about a bar tab. Semms most of them already knew all about bar tabs!

    Thank you, Alan,
I read the article you recommended and decided my best option was just to ignore the whole thing. Thanks for making me feel better about not being able to make it do what I thought I wanted.

    Hi Barbara:
    I agree. I've often found that if I ignore the bar tab, someone else will pick it up. <img src=/S/duck.gif border=0 alt=duck width=23 height=23> <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
