Excel Workbook will not maximize (Excel 2000 SR-2)

All of the sudden, all Woorkbooks whether new or old, no longer correctly maximize so that the workbook title is in the title bar.

This is the only machine that has this problem.

For clarification, I've attached a graphic showing the various effects of Maximizing, Minimizing and Restoring Up.

    Thanks,
    Jim V.

I've never seen this behaviour before.

Maybe there is an add-in or another workbook that is fooling you?

Start Excel without any add-ins by holding down the shift key whilst it starts. OK any message about not being able to edit an add-in.

Tried that - no luck... very odd.

    Try opening Excel using this:

    Start, Run,
    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeExcel.exe" /automation

You may need to change the path to Excel on your system. Then do File Open, navigate to the file in question and select it. Hold down the Shift key and click OK to open the file. Does the problem still occur? If it does, then I would guess that it is something in the Registry that is hosed. Try:

    Start, Run,
    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeExcel.exe" /regserver

Again, you may have to adjust the path. Excel should start and immediatly shut down. Now start Excel in the normal way and see what happens.

Nope - no luck - same thing.

TechNet and MS KB no help either. Baffling..

If a Registry hack is suspected, any idea where to look?

    Thanks,

    Start, Run,
    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeExcel.exe" /Safe

I would try an Office repair from the control panel>add new programs>MSOFFICE>then select the repair or reinstall.

Re: Excel Workbook will not maximize (Excel 2000 SR-2)

Tried the Office Repair...same thing. Tired Office Reinstall...same thing.

If I try it in Safe Mode though, it DOES open the workbook in full normal view (workbook title in Title Bar, etc.) However, if I then minimize the workbook, we revert back to the same problems described in my initial post and cannot get the workbook back to normal view mode.

    Are we getting warmer?

Re: Excel Workbook will not maximize (Excel 2000 SR-2)

I had something similar happen to me at my workstation where I work. It turned out that when I was upgraded to Win XP and Office XP the intallation team decided to install an MS Power Toy named Taskswitch.exe that was a replacement for the standard Alt+Tab. I liked it a lot when I first used it as it would display a small window of each application as you cycled through whatever was open using Alt+Tab. But then I started to notice this really weird behavior in some of my windows. It took a while for me to connect the behavior to that Power Toy. Eventually I decided that must be the problem, so I had the installation team remove the Power Toy and the problem went away.

So you might check to see if you have any Power Toys and that one in particular installed. If so, I would remove it.

FWIW, I found while investigating this weird window behavior that if I used keystrokes to maximize my window (Alt+Spacebar), then either R for restore or X for maximize, that would sometimes work. Clicking never worked.

If you don't have Power Toys installed I'm afraid you might have to pay for a support call to Microsoft.

    Good luck,

If you have a wheel mouse, you might try clicking the wheel. Worth a try!

Re: Excel Workbook will not maximize (Excel 2000 SR-2)

Thanks for all your help guys. So far, the only thing that works is launching Excel with the Safe switch.

No need to pursue this further, I'll live with it to the point I decide to blow out and reinstall Office.

    Thanks again all!

No we won't live with this. It should be solved.

Try locating your Excel10.xlb (extension is OK, name might be different) file ( probably somewhere in the windows directory). Rename it to Excel10.Old and restart XL.

Finally had a chance to test the most recent solution "locating your Excel10.xlb (extension is OK, name might be different) file ( probably somewhere in the windows directory). Rename it to Excel10.Old and restart".

    Sadly, this did not work.

    Thanks,
    Jim V.

Re: Excel Workbook will not maximize (Excel 2000 SR-2)

I once saw similar behaviour and it turned to be caused by the workbook being protected. If that were the case, though, it wouldn't happen on all workbooks. Also, I think if the workbook WERE protected, you wouldn't even have minimise/maximise/close buttons. FWIW...

No protection on these Workbooks. Global problem affecting all Workbooks opened on this PC. Again, the same workbooks opened on another PC behave normally.

    Thanks,
    Jim V.
