Unable to see one PC on network

I have 3 Windows XP machines on a peer to peer network. From #1&3 computers and My Network Places I can see all other machines, however from computer #3 I can only see #2, and #3. I cannot see #1. I have run the Network setup disk/wizzard on all machines. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Have you turn OFF the MS FireWall on ALL machines?

Then you need to get a GOOD firewall such a ZoneAlarm.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

The MS Firewall is off on all machines. I even tried closing ZoneAlarm on machine #1 the one I can not see from #3 but can see from #2, but nothing changed. Still can not see #1 from #3. I have ZoneAlarm set to accept IP addresses 192.168.1 to 192.168.199 on my home network.

Just tried to Ping #1 from #3. It replied OK. Ran Net View from the command line on #3 and it sees all 3 machines. Same with #2 and #3. I still can not see #1 from #3 either with Network Neighborhood or Explorer, both of which see #1 and #2.

Make sure that there is a account and password that is the SAME on ALL machines.

Machine #1: Windows XP Pro, NTFS, no password, can see all machines and files on network.
Machine #2 (laptop): Windows XP Pro, NTFS, requires password, can see all machines and files on network.
Machine #3: Windows XP Home, FAT32, no password, can not see machine #1, sees machine #2.

Re: Unable to see one PC on network

This may be way off base, but over a year ago when I first started using XP Pro, I read a tip somewhere on the net that caused me to make a change to Local Security policy, as attached. In my case, the reason is that I have a Win98 and a WinME machine on my home LAN that are run with NO PASSWORD at logon and they couldn't see my XP Pro machine until I made this change. I also did what Dave mentioned - created a "user account" on the XP Pro machine for the username I use to logon at the above two machines.

Re: Unable to see one PC on network

I've had this problem before and this tactic solved it. However I have a similar question about my current local net and none of the machines have the same user/password/workgroup. Some can see everything, some can't. Any ideas?

How do I get to the Local Security Window that you pasted in your reply? I don't see it either in Control Panel or Computer Management.

...none of the machines have the same user/password/workgroup

That could do it, right there! Gotta have the SAME workgroup for it to be a LAN, right? Maybe it IS the user account and / or password and / or security policy thing..... Or, it could be TCP/IP settings.

Re: Unable to see one PC on network

I understand that, however, since we have a bunch of contractors who come in and form the team on the fly, our workgroups are different. Most of us can see everyone and the guy next to me can't. We can't figure out why. Others can see 1/2 of the group.

Made the change. Still no joy.
