WinXP Automatically Shuts Down Every Night (Professional SR1)

For the last several weeks, my WinXP computer has started to shut down every evening. This is after many months of my computer happily staying on all the time. I obviously made some kind of unintentional change to the system, but I cannot find anything obvious that I might have done. Any suggestions where I should start looking to undo this? I have check the Scheduled Events list and "shut down" is not one of them.

Check your "Power Options Properties" - Right-click the desktop, then Properties | Screen Saver | Power

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I checked the Power settings and they are set for "Always On", and hibernation is not invoked. I actually caught the thing in the act on morning - the "shutdown" had hung on a program not responding with a dialog box requesting user input -- and then went on and very carefully shut down and powered off the system.

    Any other thoughts?

You've exhausted my "expertise" in this area. The other obvious suggestion I should have made up front was to do a virus scan with the latest available definitions to make sure the system is clean.

You could also investigate the program that wasn't responding? Maybe avoid it for a few days. The other area for clues is the event logs (Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Event Viewer).

Does it shut down at the same time each evening?
If it does then what scheduled event runs at (or shortly before) that time?
If it doesn't then tell us more about what you are usually doing when it happens.
