    Odd Template Save (2002)

With Word 97, opening, changing and saving a template works as expected.
But when I try to save a modified template (.dot) file in Word 2002, Word
tries to save the file as a .doc displaying the message below. After clicking
the No button (with intensity), I get a blank dialog with an Ok button. Quite
    strange.

I suspect there's something wrong with my installation of Word, but does
anyone else have this problem? Or a fix.

    Hi Kevin:
I don't have 2002, but...that's sounds very strange, even for Microsoft. Are you sure that the "Files of type" box in the Save As dialog box is set for templates? Does the custom template show up with a .dot extension in the name box? Any new options in the Tools/Options/Save tab?

    Re: Odd Template Save (2002)

If I just click save, I get the "warning" message. If I click File | SaveAs, I get
the SaveAs dialog. The filetype is set to .doc!

I think there's a bug somewhere in 2002. That second empty messagebox
is titled "Microsoft Word", has no text, an Ok button and the exclamation icon.

p.s. I have made sure there are no add-ins at all (except Normal.dot which
    has been deleted and renewed).

    hi Kevin,

i'm not sure. first see if you have this problem with all templates, if that's the case then maybe it is indeed word's installation procedure gone wrong.
but there are a few things to try first.

    open your template
    examine its fileformat with ?activedocument.saveformat
is it 0 for a standard document (probably) or is it 1 (template)
if it's 1 and it still tries to save as a standard doc, then something might be wrong with word's installation.
what do you get if you try this for another template (say one of microsofts standard templates)
also try to resave it with the following
    activedocument.SaveAs filename:=activedocument.AttachedTemplate.fullname , fileformat:=wdformattemplate
if nothing else helps, you could try the /regserver switch.

    greetings,

I recreated the template from a blank Word template (File | New |blank doc/template radio button, etc)

Same problem. I'll give your other ideas a go and post back.

    Thanks.

I could find nothing in the KB. Does the same thing happen if you start Word from the command line with the /a switch? I know you said you checked for add-ins, but this would use only the fasctory settings. Come to think of it, this could be a virus.

    Re: Odd Template Save (2002)

    Not a virus.

And interestingly enough, a /a run yields no problem.

Now, thinking logically, since there are no addins (or viruses!)
the Normal.dot settings are "factory defaults". I must have changed
something in the settings which are not present in the defaults.

    A hunting we will go...

    Hi Kevin:
I know you probably did this, but I've forgotten to do so at times...did you check both startup folders? And did you look for COM Add-ins (Tools/Customize/Commands tab/Tools catagory/COM Add-ins...)? Oh, & rename normal.dot, since the /a switch yields no problems?

Yes and yes... and yes. Thanks for these good reminders though...
