Inserting a Graphic (2002)

In the recent WordTips e-mail, Phil Rabichow and others pointed out a way to replace graphics in a Word document. That brought up an interesting question w/people in my office. They used to use WordPerfect and had a bmp graphic that was their scanned signature. In WP they were able to click virtually anywhere in the document and the graphic would be inserted. Now, they complain they can't do that without having all of the text pop away and all over the place. The graphic layout was behind the text and tight to that the text could be seen through the white space. Any thoughts on this?

Re: Inserting a Graphic (2002)

(Edited by Phil Rabichow on 08-Mar-03 10:28. info re moving signature)
Hi Kevin:
If you insert a bitmapped scanned signature, try the following (Word 2000):
1. Right click & choose Format Picture...
2. Layout tab/choose Behind Text. (this will prevent text from jumping)
3. Click the advanced tab & change the absolute alignments to
Horizontal: Left relative to character
Vertical: Top relative to line
4. Make sure "move object with text" & "lock anchor" are selected & click OK.

Now make the graphic an autotext entry. Since the entry is defined relative to the character & line that you insert it on, it should stay put & the text shouldn't move.

If you find that the signature isn't exactly where you want it, you could still select it & press the shift+arrow keys to align it the way you want. You will then be resetting the signature to an absolute position.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Phil. Worked just as describe -- except (don't ya hate this?)...I can't seem to get AutoComplete to handle the graphic bmp (I have 2000 on my PC; will try the office PC Monday that's running XP). Yes, I have the check box ticked, and I've used a 6-character identifier -- e.g., I used "krwsig" but it doesn't autocomplete to give me the option to ENTER and get the graphic entered. I can specifically go to Insert|AutoCorrect|AutoText and find it and insert it -- no problem.

Hi Kevin:
Type "krwsig" & press F3. If it's more than 4 unique letters, pressing tab or enter should work, although I prefer F3 for consistency.
Cheers,

Is there no autocomplete visible because it's a (large) graphic? Yes, F3 works, but I thought there would be an autocomplete.

Hi Kevin:
No, that shouldn't be the reason. Quite frankly, I think the autocomplete is a bit buggy. According to this article, there should be an autocomplete tip whenever the first 9 characters of the autotext name are unique...except that there are some exceptions listed in another article. However, I can create some autotext entries especially starting with my initials that are unique for the first 9 characters and still, autocomplete doesn't work.

When you created the autotext entry, was the "Show AutoComplete tip for AutoText and dates" checkbox marked?
