    Autosave VBE objects (97 2000 2002)

    Hi All,

    I value your opinion:

Would anyone be interested in an application that does timed export of all open
(changed) modules and forms in all open projects in the VBE ?

If yes, what options would you expect in such a utility?

Right now I have a crude sample ready, written for XL.
Would it be interesting to create one for the other members of the office family?

I don't think it would be a good idea in Access, which uses different forms from the rest of Office anyhow. <img src=/S/hmmn.gif border=0 alt=hmmn width=15 height=15> Or weren't you considering Access as part of the rest of Office? <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Well, I was wondering whether Access would lend itself for something like this indeed.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

    So where are all the other responses???? <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Re: Autosave VBE objects (97 2000 2002)

I have managed to lock up the Word VBE a few times, and once I got a corrupted form... I think that if I were working with API declarations (Windows or third party) that this would be very worthwhile. However, under normal circumstances, I either save frequently enough that I'm not worried, or I am creating temporary code (e.g., for the Lounge) and don't anticipate saving. So I'd need a way to toggle it on and off....

Actually I would like Excel to play well with version managing applications.

The purpose of this utility would be to create periodic backups?

Exactly. Also builds generations, as previous backup copies are not deleted. A user selectable number of copies is retained.

I started on this little project because I tend to do a lot of debugging and editing of my code, having XL crash just too often. Especially Userforms tend to be sensitive.

This could tie in well with Visual SourceSafe, and the ability to comapre code between versions, as mentioned in this thread

Re: Autosave VBE objects Excel AND Word (2000 2002)

    Jan Karel,

Instead of creating separate versions, one for each app, why not create a COM Add-In for the VBE? It will make your life easier in the long run. <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23> especially if you are going to continue to develop and "support" this.

    Just <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15> of experience talking.

Re: Autosave VBE objects Excel AND Word (2000 2002)

I have thought about that, but since I don't have a developer version, COM add-ins is a bit hard. Also, I have no experience with them (although this would be a great opportunity <g>).

Developing this in XL is the fastest way for me. Also, I wish to try to support Office 97 too (not implemented yet though), which has no COM addins.

    Re: Autosave VBE objects (97 2000 2002)

It is supposed to be used as a global template.

I'm not too good at Word templates, but placing the file in your startup folder of Word should load it.

Funny enough, the autoexec macro that is in this file doesn't seem to fire when loaded as a global template.
    Could anyone enlighten me why?
