    Divide text strings (Excel 2002)

I know that I could use the formula concatentate to join text strings. I've been told that there is a formula to do the opposite. I have first and last names in one column and wish to divide them into separate columns. Does anyone have an idea of how to do this?

    Yes there is.

Look at the MID, LEFT, RIGHT functions. If you try and use a combination of these functions you would be able to chop up a text string in many ways.

But for your starting point I offer the following:

Say you have a string in Cell A1:

    This will get you the First Name: <font color=blue> =LEFT(A1,FIND(" ",A1,1)-1) </font color=blue>

    and this will get you the Last Name: <font color=blue> =RIGHT(A1,FIND(" ",A1,1)-1) </font color=blue>

Assuming you have a single space between the names.

This works by going from left in the string that is in A1 as many characters as the position of the first space minus one character.

Same for the Right except starts from the right.

    Hope this helps.

You can also do it by having excel parse the data with:
    Data - Text to columns
