    Edit .dic files (2002/XP)

I have a .dic file and want to know how I would go about editing it. For example the original spell check dictionary for microsoft word is a .dic file: after going to tools, options, spelling and grammar and clicking on the .dic file and then edit, to open it, it is empty unless it has had odd words or names added to a custom.dic file. I want to know how to edit the original .dic files that open with nothing in them. Can anyone help?
Any info is appreciated. Thank You for your time.

I'm not sure what the blank .dic files are; what kinds of names do they have? The bigger dictionary files are .lex, and there was a previous thread which concluded that they simply are not editable (without some kind of special tool we didn't know about).

    Re: Edit .dic files (2002/XP)

As I recall, you can edit .dic files by putting one word per line then a paragraph mark (CR).

You can edit them using Word or a text editor (I think)

Any words you add to the file will not be spell checked -- it's considered spelled correctly
as it appears in the file.

Sounds like you already know how to activate a "custom" .dic file.

I think the ONLY dic file that you can edit is the CUSTOM.DIC, and or some third party addins.

What are the names of those "blank" dic files and where did you find them?

Also what OS are you using, this will also have an effect on where they are?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Edit .dic files (2002/XP)

    Hi Bianca:
Just to clarify something. The original spellcheck dictionary is NOT a .dic file. The standard dictionaries end in .lex. A custom dictionary can have any name & end in .dic. These are text files that Word will use (provided you check them under Tools/Options/Spelling & Grammer/CustomDictionaries/Dictionaries...) to mark words correct during a spell check. You can edit them in any text editor, such as Notepad.

You can also click on Edit, after going to Tools/Options/Spelling & Grammer/CustomDictionaries/Dictionaries... & add or delete words. If you have numerous empty *.dic files, I would delete them. By the way, while you can load several custom dictionaries in Word, Excel (& I think other Office programs) will only use one at a time.
    Hope this helps,

Phil, you are correct, I forgot about the "lex" files, and they are NOT to be edited.
