    TOC field switches (2000/XP)

Is there a field switch for TOC page numbers to appear with text as well as the page number after dot leaders? For example, A-1, A-2, A-3, etc. All help is appreciated.

I assume that you have created an Outline Numbered list that associates the letters A, B, C etc with Heading 1.

From the Insert Page Numbers dialog box you can choose Format and then Include Chapter Number.
This will format your page numbers as A-1 etc, in the TOC as well as in the page footer.

Sorry--I should have been more clear.

There are defined styles for all Heading levels. We have documents with outline styles and regular page numbering in the footer, let's say for pages 1-30. Pages 31-35 are Appendix or Exhibit pages that are numbered A-1, A-2, etc. Another scenario is that pages 1-30 need to read "S-1, S-2, etc." and show in the TOC that way, too. Number format can be changed only to alpha or numeric, but I cannot get the text-number style I am looking for to show in the TOC by only using the Format command. That is why I thought a field switch could help. The Chapter option isn't working in the way we need it. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks.

I don't know any way to get Word to do what you want. It is hard enough to get Appendix style heading numbering in the same document as numeric headings!

Suppose you try it this way. You have your numbering set up for your heading styles; they will show in the TOC (in front of the heading). Now, for different page numbering schemes, you need different sections. If you format the page numbering the way you want in each section, you might be able to do what you want...unless I'm misunderstanding the problem (won't be the first time <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>). See the attached doc.

The only way to get an autonumber integrated with the page numbering so that the TOC picks it up is to use the Heading style for this entry. This leaves you with two choices.
    1. Put the appendix in a separate file and use the Heading 1 style (modified) to apply letters in front of the page numbers. Use the RD field to include this separate document in Document 1's TOC
    2. Use a different series of styles for your headings which leaves the 'REAL Heading' series for your appendices.

Neither option is very attractive but either would do the job.
